Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey Damian......and what else is worth that tank set-up? not much IMO.
Superb fish. I think that I'd said somewhere on another thread that the only discus that I would pay good prices for are wild tefe greens.

Can't wait to see the fish in their home..luxury.

Did you add your minerals to the ro water?

IMO you should of started cycling your tank with ordinary water if the conductivity is too low the bacteria wont be able to live. The bacteria cant pass minerals across their membranes (to keep it short and sweet).

Your tank wont cycle till your tds is over 50ppm .

RO water was re mineralised with TMC Pro-Discus and TDS is now 65.
Tank was seeded and jbl filter start was added.
Also, I did not want to cycle with tap water as I really dont trust it for wilds, my preference is to set it up and even if it slowly cycles so be it.
The total volume is approx 750 litres including sump.

Hi Damian,

Yeah sure I wouldn't put the wilds into tap water either. What I meant and should have explained better was to water change up to your RO Conditions. Also it will show you the effects on the pH when you add the RO and bring a little bit more stability till you find your right balance a stable pH is very important, Keep a good eye on the pH till you get your mineral mix right. I use the preis discus minerals and it took me awhile to get that right (to maintain very stable conditions) so make sure the tank is stable before you add any discus.

Cheers
Alan

you'll get these in their habitat

Echinodorus bleherae;

if you do change your mind!!!!:P

easy to grow they are too.

I know. I'm a plant nazi.

could look cool with the focus on the fish mind. added to which it will stop them from hiding all the time. If you are into the whole bitope buzz I can loan you heiko's book on discus. It's a jaw dropper and tells you all about different biotopes. (I want it back though as it's signed!!!)

dont make me come over there.
