Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have not seen these guys for years, last time I had any was in the dark ages of fish keeping (and my goodness, you couldn't half get some stunning fish in those days)

Has anyone else seen this superb dwarf cichlids around and about?

Or anyone keep these beauties still?

If I saw any in a shop, would I buy? ummmmm.....I would have to ask do I really want to set up a new tank, but that is a good option.

Done the Tropheus and butties thing.
I'm still a fan of Tropheus, but not butties.

I think that I'm probably a fan grey coloured ugly cichlids.....and Tropheus (dubosi) are grey/blue coloured ugly cichlids.

Have you experienced Neetroplus, Derek?

Fun packed fun-sized little monsters.

I remember getting my first one...not much literature on it at all. So the little fart went in with some largish cichlids and beat the crap out of everything in sight (and boy could it move) including plecs.

The speed and aggression of mature male tropheus, and the same type of cheeky character as well.

yes ian
spent ages hunting them down and when i got some wow! rapidly regretted it. exactly as you describe above except trophs reserve their aggression for their own very tough kind whereas the neetrops have a more catholic taste in victims lol.

as for dubosi being ugly! never, an adult male is a splendid sight. click picture to see the power lol

Now now Derek.....even though I am a fan of Tropheus, you cant be tempting me. :)

....and funnily enough I do still have Synodontis multipunctatus hanging around the house! does that mean I have the tank for Tanganyikans cichlids once again?
I should have bought the duboisi from seahorse at the weekend at half price.

There are a lot of parallels with Neetroplus and Tropheus (well...certainly duboisi).....almost a crap wobbly swimmer with the speed of a jet; a powerful mouth; a big head; both are scum-eaters (aurwach); both will kill for 'fun'....and yep, tropheus stick to tropheus battles whereas Neetroplus sees anything as game.

My first one was bought from an auction....so it had had a hard day at the auction...cold etc etc. Normally I quarantine every fish (always have done), but I didn't with this one: and when let out of the bag it instantly took control of every fish in the tank. Wow.....we called that one Neet Weet Beet, but he only spurned me to get more (and a tank of their own).
