Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Here's one of the smaller females @5cm:
And a few of the males @10cm. One of the things that I find pretty consistent with this particular species is the beautiful fins. Even when we collected some of the wild fish, I noticed that they had beautiful trailers on the dorsal and anal fins.
Here's the adult F0 male...squaring off with the other large male in the tank. You can still see the beautiful fins.
And the pair. I like the way there is a distinct color difference between male and female. The female in this photo is beginning to prepare for breeding. When that happens, her coloration turns into a much brighter shade of orange.
Pre-spawning always begins with the male gently pushing her around the breeding area...a pot near the right side of the tank.
She just so happened to be pushed flat into an upper flash, illuminating that orange for the photo.

Yeah kev sorry didn't know it was called a water mark
Like if it has to be done can it not be in the corner of the photo?
Mark,
I used to put it right on the corner, but too many of my photos were being ripped off and used elsewhere without my permission. It's too easy to crop out. I can't tell you how many times I saw those photos on Aquabid, Craigs List or many other forums of people claiming them to be there fish.
Sorry it affects you that way. I do try to drop the opacity down to 15%. Hope in the future you can get around it and enjoy the photos. Your the first in years that have made that comment...but I do see your point. Nothing else I can do about it.
Sorry mate.

Didn't think stuff like that happened?
As I said in the post I think they are amazing pictures but the name just takes away from them but if it has to be done then so be it.
The reason I brought it up was another forum member asked me why you did it and I didn't really know

But now it's all cleared up Sorry mojo.
On a sidenote what camera/lens are you using? And do you edit them much... Lightroom maybe?

No apology needed, Mark. It STILL happens beleive it or not.
I have several cameras...all Nikon D200, D300, D3 and very soon a D700. I do all of my posting in Photoshop. The key to my photos is quite honestly all of the light that I throw at the subject. I use a minimum of three...sometimes four Nikon SB-900 flash units on the fish. Any of those flashes can illuminate a subject twenty feet away. When you train them on an area less than a third of a meter square, you can shoot at very low ISO, high aperture and shutter speed.
I have a talk prepared on the post editing technique. If your club wanted I could skype in a presentation sometime. Not sure who to talk to about that...but the offer stands. always glad to share the wealth.
Maybe one of these days I will be fortunate enough to visit in person.

As for the Skype call I'm not really sure because I'm not a fully fledged member myself but I'm sure some one here can point you in the right direction. Sounds very interesting would love to see it
And you were talking about visiting! What part of the world are you from?

Cheers Mo

Well, this is what makes the Forum embarrassing at times. If you look at Mo's excellent posts instead of not opening them because of his 'watermark' you might know where he comes from. He explained himself in great detail not so long ago. Mo Devlin, top man.

I Can't find Mo's post where he explains his photo background. It's very interesting though.

I've had a camera in my hand for over forty years. Spent nine years in the Army working for American Forces Radio and Television in the USA, Europe and Asia. Sent another 23 years working for NBC television...primarily in sales but with a heavy hand in the production end of things. My hobby has always been split between my love of keeping fish...and my love of photography. The two dovetail nicely.

Famous? Yes, over the years I have had that opportunity. Among them Mohammed Ali, U.S. President Jimmy Carter, singer Darryl Hall, and probably one know on your chunk of turf...actor Colin Farrell.
And as replied in the PM...it's never a problem pal. Always glad to contribute and answer questions.
Cheers
