Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I've always loved the species..but last week we had a two year old macasteri red come in fully grown from a customer. It was one of the most astonishing fish I have ever seen in the flesh..and I don't say that lightly. All the lads in the shop were blown away by it(it rivalled in colour the salt water flame angel from Hawaii and beyond). We usually get the fish in young..which is the way to sell them and buy them, so it is rare unless we are keeping them ourselves that we get to see them at adult size and , I can see why people hang on to the larger, older specimens..my second favorite until this week, my first would have been the apisto Inka. males are just stupid good looking. 2 cents ect.! :)

dont make me come over there.

hi guys,
can you have a community of apistogramma or can you only have one species in the one tank?

all depends on what type, i wouldn't mix apisto's of the same type and run the risk of hybridising, its carelessness like that that starts the hybrid trend and destroys a breed. some species do very well in prity large groups and others do well in pairs but i would always advise against mixed groups of apisto's (a bit unsightly in my eye's also) it also depends on tank furnishing and water params that would also help ye choose a suitable apisto.

I like just about all the Apistos (apart from those dreadful 'blue' manufactured things (sorry Chris).

But the question was in two parts - which would be your favourite out of all those readily available.

I suppose then I would have to go for the good old 'faithful' Cacatoides (I think they spell it differently nowadays). And, of course, you can't omit the Agassizi - but not those 'red' efforts.
(The questioner wanted to know our favourites, I'm telling mine, but also telling which would be my least favourite). The Borelli is always a nice Apisto as well, although not nearly as readily available now as it had been.

*Wayne, I'm getting a trio of Trifas shortly, all being well and if it goes to plan I might be able to supply you some at a point in the future.

It is possible to keep more than one species of Apistogramma in a large tank, with plenty of caves and hides like coconut shells so there's not too much competition for homes, but if attempting it, I'd choose one slender & one deep-bodied species to lessen the chance of hybridisation such as Borelli and aggassissi.
I'd suggest 4 ft long tank, with a few piles of bogwood & rocks to block lines of sight and to make a few different territories, try to divide the tank a minimum 3 territories in order to cut down aggression..

If they were still in the Apistogramma genus then mine would be Rams. But alas, someone decided to change their genus to somethingelse or other.

Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

Papiliochromis ramirezi
(Myers & Harry, 1948)

but Apistogramma ramirezi Myers & Harry 1948 is still a valid name.

So on that, my favourite is still the Ram.
