Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have 3 young festivum and they are every now and then changing colour instead of the normal silver with black stripe they every now and then go silver and mottled dark spots and stripe disappears and i was wondering is this normal? on-line it talks about changing colour when breading but i reckon these are too young for this? Or am i going insane

All Cichlids wil show increases in intensity of dark spots and stripes, these in most cases , remain unseen until stress or hormones cause a change where they then become prominant.

O ok kev it does seem that it happens just as the light comes on otherwise they are fine i have only had them a week so just settling in really so i hope they are not stressed in any way except for the change of light intensity. What do you reckon on a moon light do you think they are necessary? and on a completely different subject i have a post titled retro fit of substrate using turf(dried peat) i wonder if you could have a look and comment on that?
cheers

Yep, when all Fish have been in dark conditions, the necessity for colour lessens as it serves no purpose, it would be a waste of energy to enable the chromatophores ( colour enhancing cells ) . even camouflage as a defense would waste energy and would be of no benefit in dark surroundings.

re the Turf question, it depends upon the condition and form you intend using. If I had access to turf from the bottom of a trench, the place where the Slane finishes it's cut, I'd grab it, it will be wet etc, perfect for a below substrate, substrate, However, it would need ti be loosely packed like any other substrate and you would need to look at the possibility of a lower ph existing in the Root zone, excesses in either alkalinity or acidity could prove problematic, afaik, Turf doesn't occur in many situations as a base substrate but I am positive they do exist on small occasions, possibly in areas where tiny Characins or Bettas exist. As said before, Ian is a Chemist and would know more on the topic.

I should add that I am referring to Turf in the solid state, Peat swamps etc occur in most tropical areas but not in a dense state on River Beds etc.

Your lights could be too bright.
Theyd be just as happy with light from the room when the curtains are open.
Theyll also be spooked if the light comes when the room is dark or if your at the tank watching them
