Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Nice picture for a phone!
My camera doesn't get such detail!
I don't know this one, but must definitely be in the Macmasteri complex.

Thanks for that John. According to what i find they seem to be placed in the cacatoides complex but id agree they look similar to macmasteri. Relatively newly described 1997.
SH had them marked up as Apisto. sunset (atahualpa).

Far be it for me to argue with that - but they certainly have the Macmasteri 'feel' to them.

Whichever complex they're from they're very nice indeed.

I'll leave it to someone who trawls through the Apistogramma fora to come up with a definitive answer.

Good luck with them anyway.

definately not athalupa as i have kept both, seahorse lost the athalupa they had in due to extending into the warehouse house side cement dust got in the tank, or so John told me because i came specially up from limerick for some , 100% mc masteri you have there unfortunately

Here is a link to a site which has pictures of true athalupa so you can see the difference yourself

Hi,
I assume all these Apistogramma can interbreed and i was wondering have you seen albino ones? The reason i ask is that i have one that is an off white colour yellow tint to large dorsal fin and tail and purple stripe running down its back and purple gill covering stunning looking fish but I'm guessing a mongrel?

add a few coconut shells for caves they'll appreciate it and also pencil fish like nannostomus beckfordi make great dither fish for apistos, i'd also go for cory hastatus as they shoal beautifully stay small and there for wouldnt be as great a threat to small fry

something to give that tangled root look, it would really fill out the tank and give it another dimension. you could add a few plants at the back too, i've been watching loads of documentaries about amazon/south american fish and the only plants i could see were very similar to cabomba and egeria densa.

seahorse had hastatus last time i was in give them a shout, also i agree with wayne a nice gnarly piece of moor root with some mosses attached would make a big difference, if you want you could add more leaves to the bottom as in the wild they could be up to 3 meters of leaf litter on the substrate and if they breed it will give fry more hiding spaces

[quote="What did you do with the fish while you changed the substrate ?[/quote]

I removed all the tank water into buckets and put the filter and heater in the one with the fish. Poured 75percent of the water back in the tank, waited for the cloudiness to settle. Added the leaf litter and coconut caves and topped up the remaing 25percent with rain water and returned the fish to their "new" home

Tip:
Alders invariably can be found at the side of water.
There are thousands around Lough Key (I've collected carrier bagsfull there), if you fancy popping over there.
