Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Would a female GT upset tank balance?

Hi all, so I have a male 6" Green Terror, a Doriad catfish and a synodontis eupterus, would there be war if I put in a female GT? I know other cichlids would not be tolerated but would they mind the clean up crew?

Thanks :)

The male, although a 'puppy' now, mightn't immediately take to a mate either. He could possibly initially see a female as a threat - but having said that this mightn't happen and they accept one another straight away.
It's another of those 'try it and see' scenarios. But...keep a close eye on events at first and be prepared to rescue either the male or the female if the conflict happens and things begin to get out of hand.
Let us know how it goes if you decide to give it a try.

Yea as John says, no way to know for sure until you try.....
You will know within a few mins if you've love or war on your hands
Gt's are a wonderful species! Would love a tank full of them, but that's just never going to turn out pretty
It would end up like the streets of Bagdad with the fighting that would go on

The 2 cat fish will ignore th GT it depends on tank size, once the new fish can hide at the start untill she feels safe all should be ok.your tank will need to be 3ft atleast.

Its a big tank, befor you introduce the new fish move any rock work you have about the tank to keep the male GT busy for a few days setting up a territory again and feed the tank first, your male is still young and may not have got so terrotorial yet, best of luck with them they grow into lovely fish.

Well I got my female GT today but she is a lot smaller than I expected, she is about 3" and he is roughly 6" and twice the size in girth, I put her in to see if it would work and straight away he recognised her as a potential mate, tail slapping, shimmering, and generally showing off. He hasnt been aggressive towards her yet they are staying pretty much side by side.

She is far to small for him to breed with but they seem to have accepted each other. Should I just leave her in and see how they get on or put her in a grow out tank for a month or two? :)

Hard to know, if it was me, I'd leave her in but keep a good eye on him in case he start getting nasty
I'd be afraid if ya took her out, he might not accept her again a second time when she is bigger

Yeah im going to leave her in, there is no aggression at all but I will keep an eye out because if he wants to mate and shes not ready things could go bad. Can GTs mate at 3inches?

Hows your lil lady keeping?
