Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Firemouth breeding

So my firemouths are breeding. The largest male has had a cave staked out since about 3 minutes after I introduced them to the tank and has been trying manfully to entice someone to share it with it for a few months now. It turns out he's pulled. While I was marvelling last night at how dirty my tank was looking and thinking how I need to vacuum it in the morning, I noticed two of the firemouths were staking out some territory in front of the cave and "hey presto!" they had babies! Unfortunately by morning the male was guarding a single fry and the female was just arguing with the neighbours. Once I know they're going to continue to do this, I might start removing or selling some of the other firemouths and give them more of a chance.

Nice to see LJ, there's always something a bit 'special' about Cichlid parents caring for their offspring - shame the babies got 'snaffled' this time, but as you say with a bit more privacy they're bound to raise a successful brood at some point.

Thanks. I think they knew what they were supposed to be doing, but from watching them for a bit they seemed a little confused as to how to accomplish it. She was wasting a lot of energy chasing the male away (whose intentions seemed entirely good) while he was staking out the general territory. Hopefully a bit of practice will put that right.

The first batch usually goes that way.
They'll most likely have another batch.
I had a pair dispute over which direction to bring the fry and ended up with none.
Sometimes when they suck them up to move them they can also eat one or two in the process.
Its all part of their learning curve.
If you remove the other firemouths they might stand a better chance depending on how determined they are to snatch a few.
Its great to see them spawn and looking at them theyre still young !

Very young. The one I got off you is Godzilla by comparison! Some of them are very similar in size so it'll take time to sort them out. Very pleased with this because I had a breeding pair of firemouths before and I could never wean them off their liking for caviar
