Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

For the last few days, my male has been cleaning/fanning a piece of the front glass (very weird, as he had been hiding in the back for the previous 2 months since he got his bristles.) A few minutes ago, the bigger of the females decided to check out his efforts. He went off on a mad display. She is still there, but we seem to have a "waiting for the other to respond" stand off going on a.t.m. The neons are definitely attracted (anything for a free lunch!)

Updates will be posted if things progress.

Hi Ian,
Will see if I can get this stupid phone to work.

So far, he keeps cleaning and fanning a piece of glass. (same one all the time). Whenever she gets within sight, he does a sort of wiggle side to side. She comes beside him and he pushes her away. She watches at tails length for a while while he des his little dance. She gets bored and moves off.
I don't think he gets the bit where she has to put eggs on the glass for him to look after. Yet.
She is being tolerated closer to him every time she moves in.
Mabye they need to SEE a porno, not star in one!

Cheers Darren.

Currently, once I got home from work (late gig) the male is crawling up to where the female was dispatched to. He is now nudging her gently, as opposed to driving her away (obviously gotten past the hormonal rush and figured out it takes two!). She is not particularly responding, but not moving away either. I presume once this getting to know you stage is done with, business will be done.
Too late for videos (they are as far from the night-light as they can get!).

p.s. Your video seems to have been deleted:(

Update:
They did indeed get down to business during the night.
Daddy is now hovering over about 40 eggs, in the spot where the female was, not the one he chose (sound familliar anyone?).
Will try for pic when the lights come on.

Well done,

Not to steal your thunder in any way, getting them to this point can be a result of luck, after this point AFAIK, is where the difficulty lies, the Adults will actively aid the young in their escape from the Eggs, the feeding of any resulting Fry is difficult for advanced Hobbyist, Darren, aka Platty252, has succeeded on a number of occasions so a pm to him might not go amiss.

Kev.

Hi Kev,
I know the hard bit comes later. Currently, daddy is being very attentive, so I am letting him be. I will be away for christmas, so no point doing anything else for now. I might up the ante with the lighting and add more nutrients for now.

Update:
Most of the eggs seem to be viable, there's only one I can see with little embryo growth. (They grow QUICKLY!).
The apistos are not enamoured of the invader in their part of the tank (or looking for a free lunch?).
The neons have realised the eggs are too big for them and given up for now.
However, there must be something in the water, as the corys in that tank are now at it. That will keep the neons fed for a while.
Now that she has laid, hopefully mammy sturi will stop eating the aponogetons and lillys. (I have an ulvaceus with about 30 4cm long stalks coming out of it, as opposed to 45cm leaves, thanks to her. Not amused.)

It's proving difficult to get any pictures due to where the eggs and male are. He really doesn't like the flash, so I think its best to leave him alone for now. Will see how things go if I put the new light on the tank. (Boy, is 6x39W T5 HO with 6500k new bulbs BRIGHT. Might be over-kill)

Cheers Platty. That's what they were at when daddy eventually got the message.

Update:
After being away for over a week, I have come back to daddy still in the same area of the tank, but no eggs.
However, on the back of the tank there was one small (1cm) little sturi grazing under the spray-bar. There possibly could be more in the tank, but I have a feeling they were eaten. (The Apistos didn't seem too hungry! Or the neons....).
Hopefully this little guy survives.

They're not fish. They're rabbits. After a break of 24 hours, daddy is back in his spot doing his little dance. Mummy (who looks fatter than ever!) is hanging around closely, pretending she doesn't notice.

Junior is doing fine.

Hope (s)he's ready for company.
