Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have heard of some people using blanched Courgette.

Bit more boil time on that if you're worried about introducing bugs.

Replied by Alex (Alex) on topic Re: Fruit and Veg for American Cichlids
My SA cichlids never really ate boiled fruit or Veg, they did nibble but they didnt go mad for it.... And i used feed my pleco's and loaces all types..

However they did eat my homemade mix of banana, spinach, peas, garlic, shrimp and fish and they loved it.... :) !

@ CruelCoin i will try the Courgette should i cut it up in small pieces or put a lump in for them to pick at ?

@ Alex That is just a mad mix altogether i dont now were to start their, but would i be right in saying that it is fine to try out different fruit and veg see if their into it, or is their a line what i should not cross with what i can give them ?
as for the shrimp and fish maybe im wrong but i get the felling u mean out of the supermarket, like if im having cod and chips for dinner or what about a tin of tuna for lunch (i feel bad writing that i eat a lot of fish in my diet) lol, can i rince a bit of the fish in boiling water to get rid of the oil and throw a few bits in ?

Small lumps. Better if they are able to access the soft flesh under the skin.

Say, cubes around 1cm x 1cm x 1cm size?

Hi Jeff,

some good details on alternative fish foods including preparation of various vegetables and fruits at Aquatic Community - www.aquaticcommunity.com/fishfood/vegetables.php

Have to confess, I have not been very adventurous with feeding vegetables to my own fish other than the usual of lettuce, courgette etc for the plecos but some of the ideas on the site sound like they are worth a try.

Cheers,

Bill.

the odd cooked brussell sprout is usually devoured by most fish and as it stays in one piece it can be removed if the fish dont eat it quickly.
i often experiment with different foods such as shrimp, musselsfish and different cooked or blanched veg. just avoid or blanch raw stuff as there may be sprays/poisons/preservatives residue.
