Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Yasuhikotakia sidthimunkis strange behaviour

Hey guys

I noticed this today while cleaning the aquarium. I have 5 Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki for over 2 years now. There has never been any problems with aggression before. Today, while cleaning the tank (I have been neglecting it for a few weeks) I noticed that, two of my Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki loaches were constantly "fighting" each other.

However, normally, if a fish is harassing another fish this will just run, but in this case, it seemed more like a ritual than a fight. One of them is very very fat and about 3 times the size of the other one. While fighting, the smaller one will turn upside down and let the other "bite" his belly. Then the smaller one will start biting the bigger one.

Another thing I have noticed is that these two loaches have lost most of their color (in the video below you will see one of the "normal" loaches.

Any suggestions of whats going on?

As I said, they have been in this aquairum for a few months now

i think this is dominance behaviour, similar to the way tiger barbs square up to each other nose to nose, or the way pencilfish swim side by side. it would explain the subdued colours too, because obviously it's a somewhat stressful situation, though I suspect it's largely harmless. something may have happened to trigger it, like a change in territory, a new fish being added or simply one fish looking at the other funny

Lol

Yeah... well the little one picked the wrong one to mess with... he is tiny compared to him/her, and the big one is much fatter as well. I think it was something they watched on TV, that's it for them I am moving the aquarium to the hall where there is no TV.

I havent added anything to that aquarium (neither I am planning as I will be downsizing soon), I suppose we will have to wait and see

you should have told them to read a good book instead!

I think sometimes the motivations for changes in behaviour can be things we can't appreciate

I suppose you are right, I mean, the fact that I havent introduced anything doesnt mean things cannot change.

I often put myself in their shoes and try to see how life would be if everyday I was stuck in a place with the same people, sooner or later I will annoy someone or someone is going to annoy me :)

yeah, it may have started as simply as...

"Hey Bob?"
"Yeah Bob?"
"I know I've never told you this before but... you're an asshole..."
