Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys, I'm a newbie here but I've been a proud betta mammy for a while now

I currently have 5 girls and 4 boys, sadly all of them rescues. Its common knowledge that bettas are mistreated and when it comes to a particular store I would like this to end. I'm not going to name unless asked. Yesterday I came across this little guy, supposedly a halfmoon, impossible to tell since he had no fins left. Asked the staff about him, he was housed with bloodfin tetras and they were attacking him for 4 hours before anyone noticed. Broke my heart that I couldn't bring him home but I'm at capacity here. Sent spca an email already but is there anywhere else I can go, anyone else I can contact?

Could I firstly thank you for not quoting openly the name of the establishment and point out that it is against Forum policy to so do.
Of course, if anyone wants to know for reasons of being able to avoid/boycott the place then the PM facility has no such restriction..
Issues such as this have cropped up in the past (cruelty to Aquatic creatures) and - unfortunately the appropriate bodies have never supported any complainants - it would appear that the prime criterion is that the mistreated animal is higher up the evolutionary scale and - preferably - covered in fur, or at least, feathers.

Fair play for rescuing other fish you have. Forum policy or not they should be named and shamed.

Is it cruelty? Willful neglect or sheer ignorance on their behalf tho?
A few years ago I wouldn't have been able to tell you the first thing about beta's and I happened to work in a retail store that sold them! Being the kind of person I am however I made it my mission to try learn more about them!
Trust me I'd like to see all analysis cruelty carry a proper punishment! And yes if a establishment wants to sell livestock they should have to show some kind of understanding of the requirements for that particular species!
For instance there's a pet shop near me, the owner has all manor of reptiles and furry that he keeps shelf and brings into the shop as his daily companions, monkeys, chipmunks, monitor lizards etc
But he is selective who he would sell anything along these lines too! He's a true animal lover and enthusiast
Equally there's another establishment that sold a Burmese python to a 9 year old (parents were present but refused to have anything to do with the snake and it was daughters responsibility)......
There's a massive difference here!
I (general joe bloggs chap)could show interest in a certain species knowing nothing about it in both shops...shop 1 would tell me to go learn and come back in a few months even if offered thousands of euro, shop 2 would break my arm for a fiver profit
That to me is a serious problem

I agree with Eric anyone mistreating any animal or fish should be named and shamed, I am a massive animal lover of all types. if these people are named and shamed I grantee it will stop them from continueing this practise.. look what happened to the dentist that shot the lion ,bet he wont ever shoot another one

What annoyed me the most was the cheek I got of them, after going nuclear on their fb page they said that "they were satisfied that all procedures were followed by their staff" and that "according to their policy, the fish cannot be sold until he makes a full recovery" so basically he hasn't got a snowballs chance in hell of making it! When I rang the shop however they told me if o really want him to go and have a chat first. I've been doing a bit of reading and according to the animal welfare act of 1965 in order to obtain a pet shop licence you have to be able to care for the animal in your care and that includes fish, so high five with myself there. Waiting for a reply from the department of Agriculture but not holding my breath... Treating two boys at the moment, one that was almost clipped to death and one with dropsy its so beyond sad
