Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I just sat watching my tank this evening and noticed hundreds of snails in the substrate. I am tryingbto put up a video but it looks like a moving carpet. Nothing added to the tank in the last 6 months. How do i get rid of this. It wasnt there earlier when i did a water change. I would have noticed.

No sign of anything in substrate today. No idea whats going on. Baffled. They are surfacing at feeding time. Whatever they are they are in the substrate.

Add 2 assasin snails, they'll make sort work of them over 2-3 weeks and clear it up. Other choice using a sort of snail trap is add some weight down veg like cucumber, snails go mad for it, simply remove the food and the snails with it and repeat

Assasins will hunt below the substrate, actually you'll find the assasins go below substrate after they've had a big meal to digest it as I've noticed

Didnt know that. Last ones i had were allways on the glass chasing little snails. These ones are different to the usual problem. I will be in seahorse the weekend and get some. Thanks

Get yourself a pack of YoYo loaches, after a couple of days you will never see another snail in your tank. They love to devour snails.

I once found I had the same problem, unwanted hitchhikers on some plants from the store... does't take them long to establish themselves! So I went and bought 3 polka dot loaches and they demolished them in no time. Providing you get at least 3, have plenty of plants and hideyholes they'll also come out during the day. They dig through the gravel to hunt them down. I once thought one of mine had died as it was missing for days, then late one night I heard some splashing and realised it was using they water return pipe to get down under the gravel filter tray, no snail left behind  It was like a little salmon swimming up the water stream, they are interesting little fish.
