Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hello folks am interested in getting some pirahna fish.. i have a jeuwel vision 180 tank.... is this suitable for them? also how difficult / hardy are these fish? i have gathered that they are messy fish... and that they require water changes more often...

any experiences of keeping these fish?

or any suggestions for other fish?

i would like some nice looking fish, not standard run of the mill fish.

cheers

To be honest, Pirahna imo are very boring fish. Whenever i see them in petshops they look dull and are practically motionless. They don't resemble the fish that we see in documentarys.

They do grow big so i'd say the stocking would be minimal in a 180ltr tank.

If you are interested in keeping oddballs do some research and you will find better looking and more interesting fish.

But, all of the above is my opinion so if you want them get them.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

180l is way too samll for pirhanas. 600l upwards and you might consider 4 -6 of them and nothing else. And they probably will tear the samllest fish to shreds. Cleaning the tank is also a nightmare since you more than likely will be bitten if they feel cornered. Filtration is another big issue since they create vast amounst of ammonia through their diet.

If you like the fish, fine and if anybody thinks they are boring, that's their opinion. Make up your own but if you want to keep them you will seriously have to beef up your ststem. Your 180l tank would do nicely as a sump

I have a nice big shoal (23) of Black Widow Tetra, much easier to keep and great looking in that big group, especially at feeding time!
