Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I think there are a lot of coldwater species banned from import from certain parts of the world to help prevent the spread of carp pox to irish water ways. Doesn't apply to warm water fish as they would not survive in rivers or lakes anyway.

Some of the other coldwater keepers may be able to give you more info.

Wasn't aware that they are banned. You can still get them in Cork. PM me and I'll let you know where you can get them.

Anyway, I was going to get on to the Dept. of Agriculture one of these days regarding which species of fish and crustaceans are illegal to bring into this country. Will try them after lunch. Their website contains no information regarding the issue

i have read this and i have some concerns about fish i have seen local area. i have also would like to know how to go about getting some fish which will mean at some stage a trip across the pond. but i don't speak double dutch. would it be possible to have the relevant departments to have a section were they can give warnings and info on where we can get advice i noticed on an Irish finch they gave info about bird flu but if this was research by the club or what i don't know.

the last thing we want or need is the like of this www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=1447

They are illegal as far as im aware!!! Most came in poor condition and as they are coldwater (and not native) they can transfer diseases to our native species, however so are orfe, sturgeon etc. The reason is most came in from the UK and still do(illegally, ours didnt) and KHV, SVC etc (notifiable diseases) have been found in England and most of Europe for a number of years, wiping out millions and millions of fish as well as fish being destroyed to \"stop\" the disease spreading. The movement of coldwater fish from certain countries is illegal and it is this reason that the Department of Agriculture issue licences for coldwater fish, as direct importers will know, i was speaking to a Dept. of Ag. officer this week and he said it is going to get more difficult to import coldwater fish into Ireland!

Jesus had no idea they were illegal, I've had mine a few years now, just put him in an 84L tank instead of the 14L one he was in so I'm hoping he'll shoot up :)

As Drews post says, the law affects mainly Direct Importers. They are still brought across the border in most cases, majority of places as is evident on this forum don't even know that they are illegal, luckily for some the Department of Agriculture aren't as strict as our English counterparts as regards movement of livestock.
