Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi everyone!

I just bought today 2 Boeseman Rainbowfish and when I introduced them in the tank the Barbs went staight to pick their nips and won't stop it even for a second.

I have 6 tiger barbs and 1 Swordtail in a 70L tank.

I read in the internet their profile and it said that was ok to keep them together and I asked in the fish shop about them to make sure:(

What do you think is the best think to do?

Thanks everybody:)

these fish would normally make suitable tankmates, but the rainbows need time to settle in to their new surroundings. one trick to help settle things down would be to net the barbs into a bucket or bag with tank water for half an hour or so and let the rainbows settle in, then reintroduce the barbs. this usually works.

I have neted in a breeder net the rainbows for 4-5 hours now, or do I have to net the barbs?

Can I put them outside the net?

Do you think it's a good idea to leave the barbs and rainbows together in the tank during the night?

Thanks:)

put the rainbows in the tank and take the barbs out for a while. the rainbows will settle and when the barbs go back in they will be confused and should stop bothering the rainbows.
having said that tiger barbs can be very nippy little blighters at the best of times

Derek's got it spot on (again) - what has happened here is that your Tiger Barbs have become the dominant shoal of fish, any newcomers will be harassed mercilessly.

If his suggestion doesn't prove successful try taking the Barbs back out, let the Rainbows settle in and 'get the lie of the land' so to speak, then return the Barbs last thing at night, immediately turning off the aquarium light. This has worked for me, but not always - you might have to end up deciding which you would prefer to keep, the Barbs or the Rainbows...but give it a go first, if I remember your tank is quite small and the almost inevitable effect of this will be that any newcomers will not be tolerated by your already established shoal of Barbs, but try it first and make your decision after.
I'd be interested to know how it goes.

Another thing, and I'm not at all positive about this, is that 2 Rainbows is not a good number, they are shoaling fish and maybe 6 should be better? I'm sure the experts will correct this.

Dereks advice on the barbs is true, they are little demons at times, I found that breaking up the tank with nice big bits of bogwood also helped with them.
