Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Guys,
This is my first post so be gentle.
I have a breeding pair of Green Terrors and they have just produced their second batch of fry. The first batch of fry disappeared after about 2 weeks :( . I'm afraid the same will happen to these, so I need some advice on what to do?
When should I take them out of the tank?
Are they sellable or do people just give them away?
My tank is 80l, which I know is small for terrors, but I've been looking to upgrade for the past 2 months, just waiting for the right bargin/size, so I think I should be taking them out soon.

Hello R, let me start by welcoming you to the Forum...I hope you enjoy your stay.

As to the Green Terrors...well, it's around a fortnight and often sooner that many Central and South American Cichlids lose their parental instinct (but mercifully not all and not every time either) and then the fry are fair game!!!

If you have a spare tank you might put in some of the sturdier fry after perhaps a week or ten days but GTs are renowned for having LARGE batches - the problem you will come up against is that, apart from a few keen Cichlidophiles you will even have trouble giving large amounts away, really!
You could phone around the sponsors here and other Fish Suppliers but I fear you'll be hard pressed to get any of them to give you cash - credit will be the best you could hope for. So my advice would be to leave the bulk of them with the adults to provide a source of protein and save a few dozen (unless, of course, you locate an outlet for some - then you could keep a few more), but you will find it shouldn't be too long before the next lot of eggs are laid and then it all starts over!

And on to your tank size...well, yes it is rather small but so long as you only have that pair in there and no other fish and (it's quite a large and too) they are co-existing well together out of spawning time you should find it just about OK...but only for a short while longer - they aren't called Terrors for nothing, you know!
