South American Tank update
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just a quick update on my 160 litre South American region tank. Ive gotten it up and running now. Have used sand as a substrate along with some nice rocks which Ive managed to find including a nice centre piece rock that I pulled from the local River!! Ive gotten some fake plants and also got some oxygen plants, and a few unknowns that Ive had some level of success with before. Ive also introduced 3 molly fry from my other tank. Ive gotten my hands on a beautiful Golden Ram (male but on the lookout for a female to partner him!) and also 17 rummy nose tetras. Ive also added 4 gorgeous Corydoras sterbai.(Real full bodied specimens who are actually shoaling more than the Rummys!!).
Ive also added some bog wood with Java fern attached. Im presently waiting on some Java moss which I will attach to a plastic mesh divider I previously used to separate fry. Instead I will cut to shape a nice tunnel for the Ram and Corys to hide in with the hope that the Java Moss will grow around it quickly. Im using blue light along with a normal white light which when combined add a nice colour to the sand and the plants. Running tank at 25c and using a tetratec Ex 700 with spray bar.
Will be adding neons in the coming few weeks but will let the tank deal with this load of stock first which it is doing well. Id love to post some pics but Im doing an article on setting up a new tank and will show all the pics on that when Ive it finished.

If you intend to keep live plants, I would not try to have too much surface agitation. This would dissipate the CO2 needed for plant growth.

Hi Gavin
I find the Java Moss to be slow growing in my tank even with pressurized c02 and plenty of light,
did your Java Moss arrive yet?

Stil hasnt arrived but I did get Bogwood and Java Fern attached to it. The moss I expect to be here either tomorrow or early next week. Im not looking for it to grow quickly so thats a relief.
