Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'd like to buy some Cardinal tetra...but where?

Hi all...

I have two Cardinal Tetras in my tank...I'd like to stock up on more before they get too stressed, but for the past month or so I can't get my hands on any...

They are just not coming in at all, or when they do, they are not there long enough to tell if they are healthy. or they already look awful in the shop & some are dead in the tank, so I don't bother.

(I made the mistake of taking a chance before & it nearly wiped out my whole tank - lesson well learnt there!)

Does anyone know where I could aquire about 8 nice & healthy Cardinal Tetras over the weekend?

I'm east coast...Dublin/Kildare region.

Thanks!

Send a PM to Serratus on here.

He works in Aquatic Village in Brittas and Tallaght and they certainly have the greatest selection and healthiest stock of any LFS I've been in.

Yup AV will have those fish. They are notourious poor travellers, cardinals however in my opinion are lovely fish. They do get slighty larger than the neon tetra but are more colourful also. The red stripe is how you work it out (but I know you know that). I have some cardinal and neons mixed and they all shoal away together. Indeed some people say they need established aquariums to be introduced to. I introduced mine very early into the cycle process and all were perfect. (When I say very early,I must add the tank was fully cycled and all test results were fine, but again the tank wasnt more than 2 months when these guys were put into it). They are still alive today so I defo give a big thumbs up for cardinals!

I think Cardinals are absolutely fabulous fish...I love them.

I'm only have my tropical tank 6 months, but back in the early days when I knew way less, I made the common error of setting up the tank, being ill advised and buying the fish without knowing what a 'cycle' was.

Guess what my 1st fish were?...yes, that’s right, 6 lovely but sensitive Cardinal tetra! Doh!

However, after doing the usual panic research, (barn door closing after horse bolting sort of thing) I worked very, very hard to maintain excellent water stats, doing sometimes up to three water changes a day to ensure that Ammonia & Nitrite were at 0ppm...and after 8 weeks, things started settling down at last.

It was a busy time needless to say...and I'm a stay at home mother too with two little ones running around my ankles!!!

Anyway, I got my 6 Cardinal tetras through all of that only to make another foolish mistake a few months down the line...I added what I thought were heathy fish to the tank without quarantining them first. I was trying to make a shoal of 10 Cardinals.

It turned out they were terribly diseased fish...ouch! So they took down some of my old guys with them. I was gutted.:(

I have two still remaining and I would have had friends for them much sooner, only I simply can't find any Cardinals worthy of buying...or else they are not in stock for weeks on end.

So, anyway...thats my story of woe!:)

I have a feeling I'll be sorted out though this time!

I do indeed....and Serratus has already been in touch with me so if I can find a window of opportunity I'll head over and get some.

I've got seven Rummy Nose tetra in it at the moment, but I was gong to transfer them over this evening into the main tank.

Then I was going to clean out the quarantine tank and start again with the new Cardinals.

Thanks...good to know...good luck with your new lads!:)

I may not get there this weekend now after all as I have a sick little one, and as Christmas is kind of in the way, I might actually have to leave it till the New Year.

Id love to have them set up in the quarantine tank though...as sure, I'll see.

But sure, I'll definately have them in the New Year either way.
