Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

big tank and ecclectic population of fish but nice!
Have you tried rainbow fish, the likes of boesmani or red rainbow?
they take a bit of time to colour up but when they do....they can be quite nice:)
Rams are great but your Polypterus might be a threat as it grows.

looked up rainbow fish, very nice!, iv never seen them on sale, (maybe didnt notice) are them common? and what would price be like?
My Bichir is 5-6" he has stayed this size for half a year now... As long as the fish are over 2.5" they should be fine, He didnt touch my siemese algae eaters (3" ) when i got em.
Do blue rams and rainbow fish like 2 be in a shoal? think i might get a both.

they do best in a little group.rams do best in harems(1male,couple of females).
amazone swords will be eaten or damaged by clown loach, plecostomus and the bala shark could nibble them.
the price on rainbows vary, between €5 and €10 depends on species and size especially.

Ok, they will sort of stand up for themselves in a smaller fish environment- but would stand absolutely no chance if put in with the fish on your list.
And anyway they would probably end up as a small but very attractive snack for one or two of your larger predators!
If you want Rams then by all means set up a smaller tank with a pair, or possibly a trio...along with some of what those 'in the know' call "dither" fish...to put any in your mentioned tank would be a disaster about to happen. Even if, by a small miracle they weren't eaten they would be totally ill at ease with all the boisterous larger fish you have.
You might want to look at larger and better-able-to-fend-for-themselves fish, like some of the more colourful Acaras, Geophagus 'Eartheaters', Jack Dempseys...the list goes on...but Rams - no way!
Some of the Rainbows are pretty colourful - as suggested - and even the 'Bolivian' Ram, a larger more assertive fish altogether...but sadly lacking much of the attractive appeal of their Columbian cousin, (but lovely still for all that) might be better suited. You might want to look too at the African Butterfly Cichlid, the Thomasi (I forget the 'new' name for it, but it used to be in with what was in those days called Pelmatachromis, it's now something like Anolomachromis)...speaking of which, why not consider some of the 'newer' 'Krib' types? The Nigerian Red Taeniatus (that's probably the wrong spelling again) as well as the 'Moliwe' and 'Dihane' varieties are all very nice - especially, strangely enough, the females.
Well, that's my advice, but if you choose to still get the Rams, be prepared for disappointment.

Mozambique Mouthbreeders are totally unlike the Green Terror, the latter is a much more attractive fish, although its manners can often leave a bit to be desired. The former is a pretty drab fish by comparison...although they do have their fans too (I'm quite fond of them myself). You're right too, the ones I have kept were a little boisterous but never unduly so, but I can tell you one thing - they are never at the back of the queue when it comes to feeding time!
The Red Terror can very much live up to its name, but there again so can the Green Terror as well, I think both ought to be avoided by anyone with little experience of such Cichlids
...but it's your choice at the end of the day.("I know absolutly nothing about Cichlids")
It was good to read you have abandoned the Cichlid route for the time being (do a lot more reading on them and their requirements first). A small word of warning though, I've been told that Torpedo Barbs are quite bad travellers so buy specimens which have been in the shop for a little while, perhaps as long as a week, which should have by then let them get over the trauma of being imported then bring them back carefully (if possible one to a bag) and get them into their new surroundings as quickly and with as little stress as possible. You might consider turning off the tank light before releasing them as well. This should allow them to settle a little without being overly hassled by the existing fish. You might think this to be a little 'over the top' but they aren't exactly the cheapest of fish so would deserve the 'kid glove' treatment.

anyways thanks for all the info! and yeah there are torpedos in Aquatic Village they have been there for a few weeks.. so id say they would be fine.
as for my Birchir... well iv had him for nearly 2 years now... i know he will gobble up any smaller fish... but he aint to bad.. There was only one incident a while back.. but he didnt touch my 4 siemese algae eaters when i got them a few weeks ago and they were smaller then the torpedos i intend to get.. so im not to worried! id never give up my Bichir(egore)!! he is nearly 5.5-6" now.
Anyways i think ill finally stop buying fish after i get torpedos (ill try).. my Fire Eel will get huge so he will need space.. already 11-12".

They are some awesome looking snakeheads man ,are they all dwarf snakeheads? shame many lose their colours as they reach adulthood. So why not change and just get a fancy big snakehead in the 800l? wouldn't take long to grow.
