Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all.

Im just after getting small altum angels biggest is the size of a 20 cent coin the smallest is about the size of a 2 cent coin, just there body not including the fins.

My water is spot on PH is 6.6-6.4 the ammonia & nitirte's are as low as low can be so no problems there.

Any ways the little guys are getting on grand eating on bloodworms and fairly active fully coloured already and there only in the tank an hour and a half

I was admiring them there when i noticed the 1 cardinal has 1 little whitespot on his fin i have inspected every other fish in the tank and this fish is the only one with it

I don't think the altums could handle the whitespot treatment and im going away on sunday for 2 weeks so i dont have time to take them out and set up another tank

And taking out the cardinal is pointless as the whitespot is in the water

what do i do?

If you're going to be crazy, you have to get paid for it or else you're going to be locked up.

Well that will control the spread to an extend anyhow, of course the existing whitespot may be a problem, of course also it could be that the cardinal is the only fish who is going to suffer from this. A partial water change should bring about an improvement also however with the Altums, you will need to be very careful re treatments, esp if they are so young.

What usually works for me is:

increase temp slightly
get the air pump going
water changes

This is usually to great effect. Good luck.

Give them to me ;-)

Are they definitely altums? Unusual if not unknown for altums to be so small, if wild caught, unless they are captive bred? Which makes them even more interesting. Altums are fussy fish and taking them on just before you go and leave them for two weeks was not a great idea! Have you someone knowledgeable to look after them while away.

Adult fish will survive a two week food diet and lack of water change without any issues provided they are healthy and there are no power cuts etc., however leaving a tank of new altums, particularly ones that small may be asking for trouble.

Regarding the treatment for white spot, are you sure that is what it is, one spot on one fish does not sound like white spot to me.

I wish you the best of luck with them and fingers crossed they will be fine when you return.

im pretty sure they are altums ill post a video tomorrow of them

the reason i took them is you dont see them for sale too much and im sure they wouldn't have been there when i got back

my mam and dad will be here to keep an eye on them

im puttin the food for the fish into 14 different tubes so they wont overfeed haha

im gettin my uncle to keep an eye on my water conditions and do a water change if needed he's kept tropical fish for a few years when he was younger and now keeps marines

im gonna leave instructions regarding how much to take out how much cycle and stress coat needs to go in if a water change is needed

so im well prepared!:)

as for the whitespot i just hope your right!

and we have altums in wackers on the long mile for sale, arabu1973 has first pick on them but there is like 30 of them at the mo

Sounds like you have it sorted for the two weeks. Putting the food in separate doses is an excellent idea.

I have had these on my wish list for a long time, but not really set-up for them at the moment so I might give them a miss.
