Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Nitrates will probably be high at the end of the cycle stage. I'd recommend a 50% water change then add your fish. Add fish in small amounts per week so there is not a burst of ammonia. If nitrites are 0 then ammonia should be 0 as well in which case you're ready to go once your nitrates are dealt with by performing a 40-50% water change

With regards to whatever fish you want to add. Google the name of the fish and find out all the requirements of that fish. Things to check are temperature, ph and water hardness

Also for mixing fish, find out what fish are suitable tankmates. Keep things like diet in mind. Some fish are herbivore and some are carnivore. Some will also eat both veg and meat based foods (omnivore). Generally its easier to stick to one kind of diet

Aquatic Village is pretty good for stocking. They have the largest selection of cichlids in dublin and the last time I was up there it was buy 2 get 1 free on all or most fish

Good luck with the new tank

IMHO I would think that the 180 liter capacity of your tank would be too small for fonts. Fonts prefer to be kept in multiple numbers and this would further my opinion that your tank would be too small. Fonts on average reach about a max length of about 15" and if I can recall correctly my Rio 180 is only 18" wide, thus they might be a bit on the cramped side.

In addition, pet shops will often display fish in small tanks, this does not mean it can be done in practice. Most of the time these fish an only juveniles are are only about 1/10th of the actual size they will reach.

The max sized fish I have in my Rio 180 is going to be 5". I think this is about right, maybe someone else can comment on the max size of a fish in a tank that size.

Hope this is some help and welcome to the forum!!

also remember that Fronts will eat almost anything, including fish nearly half their size.

So that means any fish under 7 inches is potentially dinner......

Have you had any Ammonia levels yet ?
If not then maybe you should wait for your Ammonia then Nitrite to come and go and then Nitrate to come and stay for a bit.
