Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

You should always carefully inspect fish that you intend to purchase. Be on the look out for small or large white spots, lesions, raised scales, bulging eyes, shimmying, finrot, and of course, missing tail fins. These are to name but a few of the afflictions common in ornamental fish. To be fair, the person who sold them to you really should have known better. Depending on the species and the quality of your water and what, if any treatmets you have used, they may be ok. As to weather the tails grow back, that really depends on the damage that has been done. Fins are regenerative, but if it has been ripped off right back to the base of the tail then the damage is permanent in my experience.

Location: Finglas, North Dublin.

If the damage is that far up the tail there is a very good chance a bacterial infection will take hold followed by a fungal infection.
A lot of people use melafix so you could try treating with this.

I hope they get better.

hi ski mask i used to have 4 bgk s and i found if they dont have ample hideing places ie there own individual hideing spaces they will fight and bite each others tail s nasty little bite on these fish used to get the odd nip when i was hand feeding them but very play full to mine used to swim in and out of my fingers when i was hand feeding them prob my favourite fish great personality and great fun to watch even the girlfriend loved these fish witch is very un usual for her to like a fish and not just say oh its only a stupid fish :silly: so how many do you have think you told me it was 3 0r 4 my advice would be make little dark hideing spots from them around your tank youll find the biggst one will prob take the best hideing spot and the other 2 will just make do with what ever else is going but when they establish there owm hideing spots there wont be so much fighting or niping going own and the more hideing spaces they have the more secure theyll be and you will find them being more social when i had mine they never hid and where always out and about the tank they love blood worm also. did a lot of research on these fish and had a few years experience keeping them wounder full great fish hope this helped

:)

Hi

As Platty suggested above, I would strongly recommend Melafix. I have only used it once myself in the past for a similar problem and was astonished at how quick it worked.(about 10 days to get full tail back) As Viperbot mentioned if the probable infection goes back to the base of the tail IMO your fish will die. The sooner the better you treat.

Don't give up the ghost!:P
