Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Peaceful Community Tank ? was created by Valerie (Valerie)
Still learning ...

At the weekend, I purchased 2 male Dwarf Gouramis and 1 male Siamese Fighter. I placed them all in my 25l tank which I use for quarantining new kids on the block.

Within an hour, the Siamese Fighter had one Gourami totally cornered in the small tank, all flared and, for fear of casualties, I moved the Betta to my Rio 180l tank with my 6 Danios, 4 Guppies (3F/1M) and 3 X-Ray tetras. The Betta does not seem to quibble with anyone now.
Will I still have a problem when I add my Dwarf Gouramis in the large tank ? Should I bring them back to the shop?

Another question, the Betta elected the internal filter's water inlet as
his domicile, and plays dead, stuck to the box, for hours on end. Every so often, he goes for a patrol and a flare and comes back to his seemingly favorite spot. Is this normal behaviour?

Thank you for your much appreciated advice. :D
Kindest regards,
Valerie

I have found that Siamese fighters are quite territorial and do 'skulk' around quite a lot, females as well as males.
I don't think they move around all that much in the wild, either - but that may be due, in part at least, to their environment there.

You may well find the Dwarf Gouramis can find more refuges in your larger tank and the aggression towards one in your Quarantine tank could possibly be because that male tried to invade, or even take over, the Betta's territory. I have had this happen with my male Dwarf and Male Betta.

Hopefully things will settle once they can 'spread' themselves around a little more.

Actually you might well witness some aggression between the two male Dwarfs in your small tank, they aren't total angels!

HTH,

John

Hi Valerie,
two dwarf gouramies and a betta in a 25 l tank is cutting it a bit tight. 50l would be a better size. You shouldn't have any territorial problems in your 180l tank
I would offer your better some piece of bogwood he can hide under and he might abandon his present quaters. Floating plnats would also work

I have found my betta likes to do the same with the filter inlet, just sucks up against it and relaxes.
Mixing anabantoids can often cause problems, may be ok in a 180 though with plenty of space.
Also,I have seen zebra danios get the bettas fins in their mouths and get dragged around a bit, resulting in a tattered looking betta, this happened to a red one,but not a blue one.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

I was never able to mix bettas and gouramies, there were always squabbles, but a bigger tank with hidey holes would most likely help as said above :)

Hi all,

Thank you for the replies.
A small update on the situation... the Siamese Fighter and the 2 Dwarf Gouramies have been living happy together in my Rio180 for a little over a week now.
The Siamese fighter still has its finnage intact. He has been busy hunting down the few baby guppies which I did not manage to rescue while the Gouramies are happily feasting on the plants (esp. the Egeria Densa - I think).
May they live happy ever after :)
