Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just a little worried about my Xenia I got last week. Seemed fine for a few days then it kinda shrank and changed colour 2 days ago. See before and after pics below.

Before (7 Days ago)

After (Taken this evening)

Parameters seem fine. Could it be trace element deficiency / Too strong a light?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Seany

Hi Seany,

Same thing happened to my Xenia, it was doing great for about a
month and then for no apparent reason it crashed.

It seems to do great in some peoples tanks, so much so they
see it as weed! I've read that dosing Iodine can help it
thrive.

Thanks Del,

I but some iodine in tonight, but I fear it may be too late.
Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again

Hi Seany, xenia are renowned for crashing for no reason when the whole colony seems to be thriving. They do respond to iodine and they like high alkinity.I've done nothing different to yourself but mine is now a nuisance, smothering corals etc that i now manually remove it .Tank raised speciums tend to do better.

Thanks Kieronr,

Put it in the hospital tank last night and dosed some iodine. Will keep an eye on it. As far as I know this is a wild specimen. If you are ever fragging your xenia, do let me know.

Kind regards

Seany

Well I took all your advice guys and look see.....

Hundreds of baby xenias !!!!!!!!!!!!

I ended up having to remove all the decaying mature polyps leaving just some pieces of the \"feet\" attached to to liverock. Added weekly trace elements supplements and a small dose of iodine twice ( aweek apart) A 15% water change was done prior to all this. Seems to have done the business.

Thanks kieronr, but I won't need any of your babies just now.

Kind regards

Seany

Hi Seany,

That's great that it came back, could you tell me what
brand /type of trace elements your dosing?

I'd like to give Xenia another go but would hate to
have it crash on me.

Cheers,

Del.

Del,

I am using three different products in a carpet bombing type of approach!

1. Waterlife Seatrace - Contains all types of trace elements. 10 Drops a week

2. Kent Marine Tech I - Long acting Iodine supplement. 10ml per week.

3. Two Little Fishes C-Balance - A two part Calcium /Alkalinity supplement. 5ml per 20 gallons.

I've only used the C-Balance twice though as the calcium tends to be above 400mg/L most times and Alk tends to be around 8-9 dKH. Might invest in a calcium reactor or Kalkwasser stirrer in tandem with a auto top system in the near future and it certainly would be cheaper in the long term. Especially if I obtain more SPS corals!!!!!

Hope this helps

Thanks for that Seany,

I've been dosing Calcium, I'll try the trace elements
and Iodine and see how it goes.

Could do with an auto top off system myself, my tank is
open top and I get lots of evaporation. Would a Tunze
Osmolator be too much to ask for Fathers Day? :P

Cheers,

Del

Trace and Iodine are a must also the temp can crash them, to get them moving try lowering the temp you may be surprised, the also seem to like less than clean water
