Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Any ideas what this little guy is, he is resident in a bit of live rock in a marine tank, he has been there about 5 years. He is much smaller than he looks on the video, the hole he lives in would just about accommodate a match stick!

It is a pity he is so small as he can be very entertaining. I love teh way he looks around to his right, it reminds me of some puppet or other, but I can't remember which one :woohoo:

Filmed for a friend looking for an ID.

I think you are on the right track Kev.
It seems to have the head like a mantis shrimp and the speed.

@ Daragh, if the hole is only about the size of a match stick you did well getting a video of it. Great vid.

Given this thing is in the tank five years I doubt its a Zebra Mantis. Most only live for an average of 4-5 years and if it was a Zebra Mantis it would be nearly a foot long by now. It certainly looks like some sort of mantis shrimp, the eyes are a ringer for them but I know of none that stay so amall for so long. That said, there are hundreds of known species and probably many more not known...very cool vid of such a small critter btw. Would love to get an ID on it. Gonna do some diggin :) .

Good man Kev, I would say that is him ok:

www.blueboard.com/mantis/pics/robz_haptosquilla.htm

I can't imagine him ever coming out of his hole so not much chance of a full photo, but the 1.9cm size sounds aout right based on teh amout he popped out of his hole.

It seems he is small enough to be harmless.

Thanks.

That was some great detective work there Kev, fair play to ya. Awesome little critters. Im pretty sure I have a Pistol in my tank now. Have been hearing the telltale clicks and judging from the pattern and duration Im almost certain its a Pistol as opposed to a Mantis that has a more chaotic beat to it as it bashes it way around its cave. Thing is, Im yet to locate it. Ive tried baiting but the ever hungry toothed fish get to it. I rekon when the Spiny Puffer goes in it will hunt it down in no time. Not too pushed abut it really, as I dont consider them pests in FOWLR setups and Ive never heard of a Pistol Shrimp breaking aquarium glass (unlike the big Mantis Shrimps) but hope to see it before it endss up as puffer feed. Ive seen a good few vids around lately where folks have dedicated tanks for the big Mantis Shrimps and Im half thinking about it  . That said, knowing my luck I would be one of the rare few to hear the smash n splash...

Thankfully I don't think this guy will be breaking any glass or causing any major problems. It was Zig or Zag that he remind me of I can't remember which...

Yea you would not want to blink, he is very fast, that was filmed at 30 frames per second and he is in and out in 2 frames! At 1.20 you can see the same move slowed down to one eight actual speed and he is still just a blur.

Didn't really know where to start searching what he was, so fair play Kevin you'd make a great Detective.

Just found this lad on YouTube, he really has character, but big enough to cause loads of problems in a normal tank!!
