Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Added new Home mates to new tank.

Hi Im in the 3rd week of my set up cycle and was in a local pet shop that I have been purchasing my marine equipment. This shop does not know much about marine and corals I know this becuase one the the guys gave me two frags that he thought were just rubble!and now they are starting to grow into nice soft corals..ha ha!
Anyway thats not why im on this forum, I have been advised to add some hermits crabs and snails buy one of their expert fish people for the group, everyting was ok until 2 days ago, I have 2 blue legged hermits that are doing fine eating etc and 3 astra snails they seem ok ...anyway I have two large reg legged hermits one seems ok abit worried about the other last two days his been in his shell up a near the wave machine, he is not all the way in his shell its just his not moving around as much as he was.
Last nite I took him down from that spot seemed to cling to the rock fine 1 hour Later he as back in that spot.
Now my amm is between .25 to 0, I know its not ideal but I was going on the advice of the guy in the shop and a little bit excited of getting some animals in their. My button coral and other free... frags is doing great.
Any advise water change will that starting the cycle again, I have 20 kg of live rock and coraling algea is starting to grow on the rocks...

Defo need to get ammonia down.I would go with a water change maybe 10% to bring the ammonia down. Could also get a reducer in the shop. Also check your salinity as maybe high if any evaporation. Replace with ordinary RO water

just came back today the 2 blue legged hermits still moving around all ok the big red one seems alright not moving much just hanging around in his shell, also I have noticed one of the blue legged as move into the small red hermits shell...so where is he gone dead... do they fight over shells? not adding a grain of sand until it has fully cycled,
