green fly??
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Would anyone know if green fly are a suitable live food for freshwater tropicals or not?? (I dropped one in as a tester and a marbled hatchet was on it pretty quick!) Is there a pesticide risk, or possible bug problems even??

Greenfly are OK as long as you collect them from the plants manually - if you use ANY sort of chemical - especially insecticide - I wouldn't put them within a mile of any fish though - take heed.

Possibly one of the best foods for Fish as they are very palatable, delicious ( If Fish going Nuts for them is anything to go by ) and the majority are Wingless ( Greenflies or Aphids give birth to live wingless young ) You can be pretty sure they are safe as pesticides used on Aphids is pretty rapid and they wouldn't have made it to your Garden and given birth if they had been sprayed. ( John is right, if sprayed with anything yourself, do not use )
There are many types of Aphid, some are Host specific and can be coloured differently, there are Greens, Black, maroon and one that is a bluish-white one, it is a Lupin Aphid, they are bloody huge and not recommended because they have a powdery Wax coating that flakes off and isn't soluable in Water and wouldn't be good to have in a small fishes Mouth. They have a very soft Exoskeleton and a wonderful treat for Fish. Because they are susceptible to poisons, they are never seen on poisonous Plants.

Cool, thanks for that! I'll make up a pooter and collect some small ones when at work (I'm a gardener).Between that and the midge larva from an outside tank, I should be able to provide some good live food so. Cheers!

If You come across any Ant Larvae, these are not Eggs as people tend to think, they are like a beige Rice Crispies and fabulous food for Cichlids, just disturb a nest and you'll find them very near the surface.
Where'd you study? I went to the National Botanic Gardens and Kew.

Thanks for the link John. Not sure the last line is very appropriate for this discussion though!
VERY Important Note:
Always be nice to your specimens and gently let them go, back where you found them, once you have finished studying them.

Hi Kev. I never actually studied botanics, am more involved in hard landscaping with plants etc learned as a bonus over the years. I might take my daughter out to the Botanical Gardens though- haven't been there in yeeears!

The Botanic Gardens were trippin' on outdoor Tropicals and half-hardies for about ten years, I got hooked on them too, I grow 3 different types of Bananas and Gingers etc outside and they are still fine after the last two atrocious Winters we have just had, the "Bots" and The Zoo, my buddy is the Head Groundsman there, have lost tons of stuff that had grown outside for decades, untouched by Frost.
There has been a huge transformation in both places and well worth a visit.
