External Filter Water ?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello All
I went to clean my external filter for the first time today and noticed the water in the filter is pretty murky.
Should I be empty this out completely and refresh with new water ?
I was amazed how many bits are floating about in there ? is this normal.
Thanks

If it has been a while since last cleaning then this may be what you'd expect.
Some substrates don't help either.
Clean it out in aquarium water, and wash the non-filter media parts in fresh water. There may be abrasive material floating around that could shorten the life of the impeller system.
You'll also have to double and triple check and wash all seals as one grain will cause a leak.
Gently was out the filter media in aquarium water and not under the tap.
I have the JBL Monado.....it plays havoc with the filters.

All the detritus in the water is rich in nutrients which your terrestrial plants will appreciate.
I'm wondering if you are taking the filter-cleaning process a little too literally?
You need to clean the filter inside, just not as thoroughly as to make it pristine, pay particular attention to the pipework as if that in any way becomes clogged it will seriously slow down the water flow into and out of the the tank and filter.
As suggested, clean the media in tank or dechlorinated water - but not so thoroughly as to make it spotless, the impeller and shaft can also be given a rinse.
Replace everything and start up the filter again, taking care to not return to a full feeding regime for at least a few days - this will allow the bacteria within the filter body to rebuild numbers and efficiency.
If I'm 'teaching the granny how to suck eggs' I apologise, but it's still worth repeating this sort of information from time to time.

Just to add to the above advice. It's good to develop good habits like recycling your water for your plants and lawn with the dreaded water charges looming. 'Every little helps' as they say.
