Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

So I've posted in the introduction section, now it's time to actually post some pics of my tank and maybe get some advice too. I've got a few pics at different stages of the tank, firstly is what I had without any plants in it.

The second picture was my first planting attempt but then I did some reading and decided to replant the left hand side Echinodorous and other plant I can't name into more of in a more spread out fashion. I also replanted the leafier of the two plants on the right hand side which I also can't name. (Yes, first schoolboy error, not getting plant names in the LFS!).

I'd be interested in any and all feedback, it's still pretty much work in progress, I'll be getting a water test kit this weekend. Ultimately I intend to have 5/6 Sterbai in the tank once the cycle is done.

Yeah I've got some different colored dragon stone to form an alcove on the right hand side, with the taller plants I figure it could be a nice hiding place for fish although with the filter I'm thinking the flow might disrupt anyone looking to hide so I may rethink.

On the filter itself, its a Stingray and I think it's just too big for the tank so I'm considering a swap out for something smaller or possibly even an external but I'll give it a few weeks before doing anything like that.

I've used a fluval u2 in a tank of a similar size and they're a great filter. A tad expensive maybe, so shop around. Good luck.

Looking good, I think the corys will be happy there.

Thanks guys

I did my first water test on Saturday night, with the tank running for 9 days at that stage. Results:

Ph = 7.8
Ammonia = 1ppm

Nothing for Nitrite or Nitrate.

I've added some tab food to try and keep feeding the ammonia, I noticed a good few snails in the tank too (assume they came in on the plants or stones) so as I find them I've been killing them and leaving in there. More ammonia!

Hopefully in about 7/10 days I'll be well down the road with the tank.

What else, apart from corys, are you planning on putting in the tank.....thinking to the future I guess :)

I'd suggest not bringing up the ammonia anymore just yet, just see how that level (which is quite high) will drop with time.

Another suggestion, if you don't mind, is that if you are adding corys within the first batch of fish then make sure that you remove any fungused food that you've been using to help seed the nitrogen cycling: the food may have aflotoxins on it and the corys will soon find it (death is quite rapid).

Hope all goes well, and the tank looks nicely balanced and not over done btw.

Cheers Ian, appreciate that advice.

I'll give the gravel a good clean, I got one of those siphon type cleaners when i bought the tank, and will give a scout around with my planting tongs too just to be safe.

Tested last night and the Ammonia was only at 0.5 ppm, so will keep testing daily.
