Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Fitting Juwel Reflectors ?

Hi All . This is probably is a really dumb ass question but I’m just looking for confirmation I done this correctly.

I'm just a bit confused if I fitted the reflectors the right way round? One of the sides of the reflector is a longer length than the other .So should these longer sides point towards the back of the tank as this is where my plants

This is a picture of how I fitted them. I've fitted the reflectors facing the same direction on both tubes. In the picture the side where the lead is pointing out would be towards the back of my tank.

Hope what I’m saying is clear.

Thanks :)

Barr, Kev is correct. You need to turn the reflector that's on the side with the lead around the other way.

This is where I'm getting a bit confused :silly: I thought from what Kev has said it is fitted correctly. The tube closest the lead has the longer side facing backward?

Wide part to the back on the back, wide part to the front on the front if you get me. You want the wider parts to reflect light from the back and front into the middle of the Tank.

Ahh ok so if I do as Luap says and turn the reflector by the lead the other way round then this will be correct.

I was just thinking as most of my plants were in the back ,the way I have it at the moment would have suited this setup more.

Plants are what's known as, phototropic, this means they will grow toward the light, I imagine, because they are at the back, they are probably taller growing ones, while I'm on my subject, Geotropism is where the roots always grow down due to hormones, Auxins in Plants, which cause downward growth following gravity due to starch granules in the root cells, Hydrotropism, where a plant's Roots grow toward Water, is negated because the plant is surrounded by it so the other two , being stronger reactions, take over. Thought you'd enjoy the info.

Sorry for the Soap box.

Thanks for the detail Kev :)

What I was trying to do originally was position the reflectors to try and get as much light to the back of the tank as possible. As suggested I have the back reflector changed round now.

Just to confirm I understand correctly – does this look right now ?

Hi Barr, I'm a Plant Nut, my occupation I'm afraid, yes, in my opinion, that's the right way, it maximises the containment of all available Light within the confines of the Tank, reducing bleed of the valuable light on to the carpet or surrounding walls etc.

I'm glad I asked now  There was no instructions or nothing on the Juwel website about how to fit them.
