Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin
Leaving fish for 3 days...

I'll be on a short holiday starting this weekend and do not have anyone that can feed the fish, do you think they could be ok for 3 days without eating?
I have goldfish, danios, barbs, tetra, mountain minnows, one betta and one endler, plus a few young mountain minnows (about 2 months old).
My concern would be more for the youngsters and the endler being so small...
I do not have and try not to buy - if at all possible - a time feeder.
Should I feed them a bit more before leaving, start to fatten them up a bit, leave algae wafers and/or freeze dry tubifex in the tank? Or?
Any input welcome,
tx in advance....

When we go on holidays for 2 weeks, we get someone to throw in some food every 3 days (I prepare little cups for each feeding with the required quantity, hence limiting the chance of 'over-feeding').
They will just be happy to see you again on Sunday night !

i often dont feed my fish for a few days and nothin happens - its heavily stocked from 5" archer fish down to 1" cory sterbai and the (very hungry and aggressive eaters) archers dont snack on even the smallest fish. you should be grand your stock doesn't have anything too predatory i'd say if your smallies were going to be eaten they'd be long gone by now

i regularly leave my fish for a week without food when going on holidays.longer than that would require help from a fishkeeping friend. if you do get a friend to feed measure out the portions, as valerie said, to be sure.

It's no bother at all to go for that length of time,I've often done it for 2wks.
Just go and enjoy the hols, and don't worry about the fish.
mmm. dave 2 weeks might be pushing it a bit lol, but a couple of days without food would be no problem and would probably be beneficial as most of us overfeed our fish anyway.

Sometimes better the last time i went my sister killed 2 crayfish, a crab and a few fish by over feeding and leaving the top open so the crab could escape.
