Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

So it begins..

Got two little aquael tanks today, both of them are 26 litres so for a breeding trio and selected fry it should suffice for now, got to take things slowly first :P

So literally through the door and I am going to rinse and clean the substrate (which is natural sand, yes im aware of cleaning hastle and that jazz) then ill be adding my water and generally setting all up, also have a de-chlorinator as they said the formula has been changed so simply leaving it out doesn't let all the chlorine evaporate? maybe some could shed light, either way it will simply help speed the bacteria growing process.

Apart from that all is well..so far, yet to do any of this but if anyone has any tips for this then please shout, have a good idea but any little time/mess savers would be much appreciated :)

cheers, Chris

Put your sand in first ... duh, then get a newspaper, not a sheet, a whole Newspaper and place it on top of the sand, then add the Water, totally safe and not one bit of sand will be displaced so it stays spotless.

haha yeah had come to that conclusion, I actually just used a bucket to pour the water in, fond it left the sand a cool effect, very glad that the sand hasnt left my tank too dirty, should be a week and it will all settle down properly and be clear as can be

Just left the filters going and so begins my cycle :)

Yeah I did see it but when with tetra as I knew it, damn, well the tetra works much the same I think and I have already applied it now

Would it even be worth doing the other now or just do a test and see how its worked out?

Cheers man, well I just done a little water test there after a week, and its sitting around 0.25 ammonia with 0 nitrites, so going to keep an eye on it whether its going down or up after adding the conditioner, shall see over the next few days

Would adding 3 fish now and then doing continual water changes be ok? or what would someone recommend?

Adding some hardy fish should be fine, i usually add some hardy fish after a week or so.

Then a few weeks later add the rest.

Cheers smelf, done exactly that added 3 white cloud minnows to each tank and keeping an eye on things

ammonia is currently around 0.50
PH is 7.6+ its a little darker than my indicator which unfortunately only goes to 7.6
Nitrite is 0.25
Nitrate is closer to 20

So any tips? fish have been in now for 3 days should I do a water change or hold out a little more to let the bacteria get caught up? and if I should what % roughly?

Also in terms of PH any got a good idea to stabilise it or how I could geta better result/ I am keeping guppys who arent keen on big water changes and a stable ph is definitely needed.

Also what test kits should I be looking to check my water hardness please, more so going personal opinions here as im sure there are plenty available

Thanks
