Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Particles in water due to corries ruffling

Hey guys

I've got a new set up going. I was on here a month or so ago with questions. Anyway I have a 54l tank with 6 endlers and 4 panda corries.

I do about a 20% (sometimes a bit more) water change once a week with a siphon and give my fine substrate a bit of a vacuum while I'm at it.

I've only had the corries just over a week but ever since I got them there's quite a lot of particles floating around in the tank from them ruffling about in the substrate.

Is this normal? Or am I not cleaning my substrate properly when I do a water change?

Thanks for any advice.

Kevin

If i was to guess id say its just the fact that the corrys spend most of there time down the bottom of the tank forageing through the substrate
and it is causeing the substrate to stir a bit

just my thoughts could be wrong

It's not sand - it's very fine little stones I guess. Brown in colour. I gave it an extremely good clean before I put them in. Rinsed until water ran clean. That was about 2 months ago when I first got started.

The tank doesn't go cloudy.. There's just bits of debris floating around. They just ruffle up these little particles.

So I don't know is it that I'm not cleaning properly with my siphon.

I wouldn't worry about it Kev,it sounds like the cory's just doing there job......The filter can only do so much so some uneaten food and there shit can get lodged in the gravel and if left there would start to rot so the 'particles' your seeing is just what the cory's have ruffled up to give the filter a help in hand!!

Hope this helps,Ger

Replied by stretnik (stretnik) on topic Re: Particles in water due to corries ruffling
They should be added to EVERY Tank where possible because they do what we can't, constantly stirring up the Substrate!! I have posted this before but as your Filter gets filled with the rubbish from normal day to day activities it starts to trap finer and finer materials leading to virtually crystal clear Water. They are doing the perfect cleaning job and the amount of crud stirred up will lessen over time, I'd suggest leaving well enough alone.

Kev.

Thanks guys.. I just saw all these bits and thought the whole tank was filthy. In fairness, the water is clear in the sense that it's not cloudy. Just has a lot of bits floating around. Especially when I go to feed them. Corries go mad digging and bits go everywhere.

As for my filter - what exactly do you mean? It's running anyway. So I presume it's doing it's job. I've got a fluval u2 which has two sides with a sponge and carbon pad. So I clean one side every 2 weeks. I was doing one side every week but I thought afterwards that would be over doing it.

I have my 6-in-1 water testers and NO2 and NO3 always seem to read zero. But I'm pretty sceptical about the accuracy of these tests. I haven't tried another test though. Probably should buy something.

Alright Kev,i was just asking about your filter to eliminate it from your problem(well non-problem) and you said it's fine so coola boola,it seems all good!!
And i think you will find very few people who are not sceptical about accuracy of test kits but what can yeh do but look after the kit ie.thoroughly wash tubes after use, tighten lids etc.,so if it is inaccurate then its no fault of your own!!

oh and is your ammonia reading zero?

Actually the 6 in 1 doesn't give ammonia. It gives nitrate, nitrite, gh, kh, ph and chlorine..

I guess that's not good. I should get something.
