Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Ok I am getting myself some "pure bred" strains of guppies very soon, they will be my first proper go at fish and also at breeding, so I really want to get it right. I currently have my tanks set up and all seems to be running fine in that department however in terms of food I need some help, mostly because of the amount of brands in similar foods.

I will be feeding live food and flake as well so I will need a few things from my foods

1. Quality, what brand normally offers the best live food
2. Without culturing whats best frozen, freeze dried or sometimes you see just dried
3. Blood worm, mosquioto, Brine shrimp and daphnia will be my main livefood, I can get all types in local LFS readily and easily, is there another you recommend for growth and quality in terms of minimal waste and high nutrition
4. Really want to know a quality flake food, money isnt a main worry as this is small scale and I really want the best available or a few ideas
5. Any tips for me in general for foods or what to watch out for would be much appreciated :)

Thanks in advance
5.

This may be a silly question, but what do you mean by 'pure bred'? Do you mean wilds? If not are they fancy variety? The tank breds will eat just about anything in my experience and still breed like rabbits.
If you do mean wilds, it seems they are just as accepting of all foods as the tank-bred strains, from what I can find after a quick search.
All fish will appreciate live foods, just ensure you are getting it from a reputable source, particularly bloodworm. Frozen food- all of it you will find in LFS is prob as good as each other. Only prob I've ever heard is whether it has thawed at any point before reaching you. Almost impossible to tell though, so an element of trust with your LFS is required here. Brine shrimp or bloodworm are loved by guppies. Try get some veg into their diet too- diced spinach, lettuce etc will sink slowly and give them time to eat it.
Mainly, just vary their diet with good quality foods and you'll be doing fine.
Finally, as for dry foods, just ensure you get a good quality one from your LFS of appropriate size for their relatively small mouths. One that doesn't sink too fast would be ideal and ensure it has carotene in it to help bring out their best colours.
Throw up a photo when you get a chance.
Hope this helps,
Lorcan

Yes sorry Fancy guppies is the correct term, wasn't sure if people would think im just sying their fancy rather than their strain

Yeah I know the live foods I want mostly just looking opinions on what they find best as there are a lot of different types out there, flake food seems quite general I have a colour enhancer flake food from tetra, though no idea how good it really is

Thanks for the replies
