Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Is it true you have to put airoboard under a heavy tank when setting it up?
450 ltr.. If so, for what reason?
Cheers :)

It is certainly advisable to do so to avoid any cracks occuring in the base of the tank.
The last thing you want is to fill the tank with 450ltrs of water and find it is leaking due to an inbalance on the supporting cabinet.
If you were closer I have spare 1 inch thick sheets of aeroboard.
Aeroboard is very cheap and can be found in most hardware stores.

the main reason for putting aeroboard under an aquarium is to even out the base it is laying on as any small specks of dirt or uneven wood surfaces etc can cause stress cracks as Greg has said above, and as he rightly pointed out last thing you want is 450 litres of water flooding your house. also just an added little hint you can get aerofoam tiles and i find these very handy to place under rocks in aquariums for the same reason to stop stress cracks they are cheap and easily covered by substrate, better safe than sorry

I was only thinking about this myself a couple of days ago. Previous tanks of mine i've done this with, but the jewel rio i just got is designed in a way, that the glass actually sits on a lip that is part of the bottom frame of the tank, which i thought was strange, im assuming the engineering of the jewel tanks are tried and tested!

Hmmm....just set up a 560L tank with nothing under it
...but the cabinet has a nice smooth finish!

I would say if it is already setup and running an you had no issues you are ok to continue.

Juwel aquariums should NOT have a base mat put under them.
The plastic frame underneath them has a center piece that pushes against the base glass when placed on a base mat.

All tanks with just a glass base should have a base mat.

One grain of Sand and crack!!! You'll need a new Tank or a whopper repair bill, what appears clean, even and safe to the naked Eye isn't necessarily so, just look how easily a Tank scratches despite being careful, Base mats all the time !! Sometimes the cabinet surface appears clean but the sand/grit is on the Glass bottom !! Juwels, Aquatlantis etc. with raised basal platforms don't need it.
