Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello,
i need to get a new filter for my 200l tank..totally confused with all the online info.
priority is healthy happy fish but cost to purchase and run is also a consideration.
what litre per hour rate should i be looking for ?
i dont really mind if its internal or external. id love external but they seem very expensive or is there an unbranded type that isnt 150e plus somewhere?
also when i get it im assuming i rinse it and then set it up with the old filter still running how long should i leave the 2 in there running to get the new one active ?
any advice appreciated Im in cork and not great with online purchases.

I would not get too hung up on the flow rates of a filter as they are all rated based on the pump performance without any media in the filter. The addition of the filter media will reduce the flow rate and as the media removes debris fish waste etc from the water, the flow rate will slow further. Ideally you want yo turn the tank volume over 3 to 5 times per hour.
Probably more critical is the ability of the filter to accommodate sufficient volume of media to maintain the water quality in the tank.
There are several options for external filters which may not break the bank. Could be worth looking at the sponsors websites and price them, see which one best suits your needs. Most of the sponsors will dispatch the filter by post or courier too.
There is one place selling all 3 filters at a price that will not be beaten, but they are not a sponsor, so please drop me a pm if you want the details.

Eheim External Filter Ecco Pro 2036 - listed tank size - 160 to 300l, Power consumption of 8w, flow rate - 750lph, media volume - approx 5l

JBL Cristal Profi External Filter e-Series e900 - listed tank size - 90 to 300l, Power consumption of n/a, flow rate - 900lph, media volume - approx 4.7l

Eheim Classic External Filter 2217 - listed tank size - up to 600l, Power consumption of 20w, flow rate - 1000lph, media volume - approx 6l

Eheim Classic External Filter 2215 - listed tank size - up to 350l, Power consumption of 15w, flow rate - 620lph, media volume - approx 4l

Cheers,

Bill.

Really do we have to censor our posts according to sponsors? i think i know the site your talking about but is that not the idea of a community forum?

Its not that we have to censor our posts according to sponsors, there is an unwritten agreement that we do not actively promote other business on the forum if they are specifically related to fishkeeping.
IF on the other hand, you were looking for a water butt to collect rain water, I would have no problem posting a link to the local builder’s providers which I know to be the cheapest place in the country for them.
Similarly, for alternative products, such as soils for purposes other than the aquarium, you will frequently see links posted to other businesses.

I will defer to JohnH and BlueRam to provide more details on the subject, however as far as I am aware, the sponsors give a lot of sponsorship to the forum, photo comps and the likes, and it is a 2 way deal, so we don’t actively post anything that is going to intentionally take business away from them.

Regards,

Bill.

where do you think the Forum would get support from for activities such asPhoto Competitions, Fish Shows etc? The Forum MUST protect the Sponsors because of their support, these Sponsors provide employment and Tax revenue to a shrinking economy, something online Companies registered or operating Overseas do on a much reduced scale. You will notice none of them are Sponsors here so I think it's in the best interest best interest of the Forum to continue filtering out the advertising of Online traders.

I love my fishys just want them to stay happy n healthy and the more i read i think external would be the best long term. i'll have a lookie and see if i can find sponsors n ask them,,,seems fair x thanks all for replying.

Just to note to all

As Kev and Bill have already stated we do not allow the naming off non sponsor on the forum to date as we get a lot from our sponsors with in the end off the day goes to lucky winners off Competitions and so on

I think i can say that nobody would be in this hobby if our sponsors or our LFS was to go under

This is something none wants to see and we all have to think off the overheads shops have also

I am not saying just shop there that is up to you but as admin myself and others on the site we have to keep everyone happy and that is what we are here for

The PM section is there for members to chat so if there is a non sponsor that you want to tell someone about please use this

Just one more thing you may find a great deal one or two times online but at the end off the day all our sponsors on our forum help everyone out a lot and give the best deals they can and great discounts

Don't forget that all our sponsors give 10% discount to ITFS Club Members

Thank You

Sean

I did not realise that Sponsors give members a 10% discount! I use one of the Sponsors and never thought about a discount! Have just looked at the membership form and was wondering - what is a Senior Citizen? David.
