filter media renew/replace
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi
I am just starting to use an internal cannister filter and it is suggested that the carbon media be replaced every 4 to 6 weeks which makes sense I guess but it also says to renew the biological filter media(some form of ceramic media) every 4 to 6 months.
This seems to me to be a bad idea as it would mean removing beneficial bacteria. Am I missing something?
What would you advise? The filter will have carbon, ceramic and sponge.
Thanks
Dec

Hi Dec
As for the rings and the Sponge a quick rinse in tank water every few week is all you need to do just make sure it is in tank water and to to clean it tomuch
as for replacing the media the rings will last a long time and the only time you should have to replace the the sponge is when it is actually falling apart
As for the carbon in a marine tank i am changing it every few week as in 3 to 4 weeks
In a freshwater tank 6 to 8 week would be ok but would be best to do it a bit less just to make sure
Not may people us carbon but only use it to polish the water
If you have a read off this link might help you a bit more mate

If you want to refresh the ceramic-like Rings, put them in a hot Oven for 20 mins, all of the Junk will burn off. Re Carbon, I would suggest Easylife Fluid Media, it polishes the Water and creates a wonderful environment for Fish.

Whichever media you use, I would not change all media in one go (if you're going to renew it at all).

Hi Kev
Just to confirm, are you suggesting the FFM for use as a water conditioner? Or just while the filter is new?
Thanks

The people who recommend we replace the filter media on a regular basis are the manufacturers who are trying to generate a source of income for themselves.
Seachem Purigen is another product that does a good job removing nasties and 'polishing' the water.

Thanks to all for replies
One more question. What would you use in place of the carbon when I run out? I have enough for 2 replacements.
Sponge, noodles or some other?
Thanks
