Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Simple as shelling peas (if you believe that you'll believe anything).

The kit i got on ebay has a little bottle of eggs without shells and thats with im using now, it also has a little bottle of food. I have ordered grade a 90% hatch rate eggs with the shell, should get them tomorrow morning. Apparently Artemia harvests across the world are 65% down so the eggs will be going up in price.
Stephen.
They seem to use this excuse every year for the reason why they are putting prices up!(At least that's how it seems to me).
Still, for the little bit of effort involved, it's still a pretty cheap live food source.
Although I only ever feed my fish newly-hatched - but am trying to raise some in conjunction with the experiments going on by yourself and others at the moment...mustn't be 'left out' now, must I?

Ok so its about 24 hours since i put the eggs in and this morning there are things moving around in the hatchery
. Its hard to tell if they are all hatched so should i leave them in the hatchery longer or move them into the rasing tank? This is all very exciting! Oh one problem i am having is the air line in the bottom of the rasing tank keeps poping up the the top. I have a sucker thing holding it down but after a few hours it just pops up. Might try weighting it down.
Stephen.
Sorry, I missed this one.
It's a bit hard to advise you as I'm only experimenting myself, but you should, I think, wait to get a reasonably 'substantial' hatch before transferring them - but, as I say, that isn't 'hard and fast', just a feeling.
When they first hatch the hatchlings feed off the egg 'yolk sac' for a while (24 hours, I have read) so would need no feed to start with.
I would be careful what you use to weigh down the airline, I think lead might be a bit 'dodgy' with the marine water - perhaps Ian can tell us more?
Perhaps something like the wooden, or plastic 'airstones' which marine keepers use might be a better bet?

I use just the open end of the air-line tube.....it's just a matter of keeping it down.
The JBL dry eggs are about a tenner.........and go a long way.
I am a bit lazy in that I do not bother harvesting any shrimps at the weekend as I get my freeby babies from the LFS.

Sorry but my earlier post about contributing to this thread was premature, had to put the project off as I got a vision 450 nearly unexpectedly so too busy organising that. Someday will try again.
Pat.
No probs pat, good luck with the new tank.

Brine Shrimp are growing well should be a good feeding size next weekend. Bit of a smell from the water so i added 2l of fresh salt water which did the trick. I started a 2nd batch today so i have a good supply.

Sadly my 'experiment' stalled after someone (OK, it was me) left the airline out overnight and they were all but all dead in the morning!
So, I've started a new batch today.
Here's hoping for similar success to yourself.
