Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Manado is fabulous stuff but I'm afraid you just did not wash it enough, you may THINK you did but believe me it takes a lot of churning to get it clean. I used it and was thrilled with it, my only complaint was how light it was.

i spent about 3 hours cleaning it before i put it in but i may not have done enough.i gave it a good vacuum there adjusted the flow so it just sucked up the dust and not the bigger bits got a lot of dust out so hopefully that works left the filter off untill it settles

I had a problem like this with bonsai soil I used! I got an old filter washed it out and stuffed it full of fillterfloss and double dosed with easy life filter fluid and it cleared up nicely,I was washing the floss out every day for a week!

ck1 if you can put in filter floss/wool in your filter and it will trap the fine pieces have done this many times and it works a treat but unfortunately kev is right it takes a hell of a lot of washing will a lot of agitation to get the dust out

Use the filler from an old Duvet or buy Batting from a craft store, way cheaper and virtually the same product.

Penny's or Dunnes Stores stock it very cheaply, particularly what you want it for. They rather inconveniently put the stuff inside a pillow case though! I have Manado in my system and had the same problem, so ripped open a pillow and have been using the 'floss' from that. Way cheaper than LFS and free if you have a spare pillow knocking around that the missus won't notice missing!

I think you need to avoid fire retardant pillows to avoid nasty chemicals

Spot on with this! definitely need to avoid anything with a flame retardant label on it. Most of the fire proofing / flame retardant chemicals are quite nasty if they get into the water, could cause all sorts of problems including killing your fish.

Cheers,

Bill.

It's amazing what you can learn here and nice to be able to pass it on.

I have used both Duvets and Pillows for o er 20 Years without problems, I would imagine the retardant is on the cover and not on the filler.

Although it's too late at this stage, the Manado is best prepared by first dumping it into hot water....then skim off the top layer.

I would say to check any impellers on the filters.....throughly clean the shaft to minimise wear on the impeller shaft (especially if metal).

Thanks for posting this CK1, I have a similar issue (never knew where to look), it has calmed down greatly with the constant cleaning of the filter sponge.

Quick question is there any type of fish, snail or shrimp that would eat the loose particles?

after days of trying to clean it i decided the only way id actually get it clean was to take it out.when i had it out i dicided id put in sand instead of manado i had originally planned on using sand but changed my mind the last minute for the manado. i left about an inch of manado with aquabasis under it for the plants.i liked the manado but was never fully happy with it.im really liking the sand although the fish colours dont sand out as much
