Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi

I got a SH tank which came with algae eater. Question is, if I see no sign of algae do I need to feed him/her? Or how would I know when a few flakes are required?

Thx

I use algae discs, which some algae eaters love. (weather loach went crazy anytime I placed one in the tank)

However, I have a hill stream loach that won't go near them and I'm trying to find an alternative to them as my new tank is algae free (which is a first for me)

As damp squid said, try algae wafers.........drop half a wafer in and check in a few hours if the fish went for it,it wont disintegrate and foul up your water in that time but if it didn't go for it make sure you whip it out.....try judge how much to put in the next time if it ate just some of it in that time......Do you know what type of fish it is?

Hi

Can't remember the name, I'll try to add a pic later. I'll pick up algae wafers on the way home and drop one in. Is it safe to assume the angels and tetras will leave it alone?

Thx

I always put a slice of blanched courgette/marrow (cooked in the microwave for a couple of minutes in water) on a veggie clip in my tanks for them (you can even store blanched courgette in the freezer for whenever you need it).

Apparently autopsies of wild caught specimens, has found that they have veggie matter in their stomachs - so I always do the same. I find in some of my tanks they ignore the courgette (the platys and swordtails still go for it) and in others they never seem to leave it.

Apparently you can also feed blanched spinach, chard and allegedly even parsley - I have tried all these (fresh from my own garden), but mine still prefer courgette :)

I have bought spirulina flakes, tabs, etc., but they completely ignore them.

I've read that they can't eat the really tough green algae you see on your glass, just the biofilm of algae from plants and any solid structures in your tank, i.e. stones, ornaments, etc.

Hi

Thx for the replies they have prompted a couple of questions.

What is a veggie clip?

If they eat biofilm is it likely there will be an ample food supply in the tank that I can't really see?

Thx

Hi Dec,

veggie clips are regularly used for marine fish, so you'll often find them in the marine section of fish shops, below is a link to the type that Seahorse Aquariums stocks

www.seahorseaquariums.com/store/product/...eaweed-Feeding-Clip/

They are literally a clip at the front, for you to place your vegetable in, with a standard suction at the back (although its also possible for them to come with magnets) so that you can place it in the tank. Of course, some people weigh vegetables down using rocks, etc., but I like to be able to see whats happening with my veg. I also recommend taking it out before it turns to mush

I think the best advice I can give is to watch their belly - if its fat, they're finding food, and if its not...,

Helen

hi, I use algae mini tablet (tetra) in my tanks as a treat, all my fish go nuts for them (including bettas). I also use algae wafers in one of my tanks that has catfish, tetras, and angels. the angels aren't that interested, even thou they do not disdain a bite or two, but it is quite funny watching the tetras picking the wafer up and running around with the wafer in their mouth trying to steal it from each other... I should really film it!
