Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Water Butt How to?

Hi

So what are you guys doing for water butts? DIY or buying? Does anyone have good links for how to.

We have plenty of rain water seems a shame not to collect some. I'm interested in how people mange to filter and heat, outdoors not being the ideal place for electricity.

you could buy a water butt or use a wheelybin but any food safe container will do. you can always link more than 1 with bulkheads and pipe so the water flows from 1 into the other. the last 1 can be a small storage box full of activated carbon or any media you wish for filtering or even have it between 2 butts so you have collected water in the 1st and filtered water in the 2nd! ian mentioned before that the water needs stabalising so an airstone would help or use pond oxygenating granuals to hepl there (i'll leave the man who knows though to elaberate more on that) there is noneed to heat it out doors. thats my idea's of it so far anyways

i'll be setting up a 1000L collecting drum outside myself for rain water but that'll be sometime next year

I've been kinda looking at a spare wheelie bin. I hadn't thought of stages though.

well instead of stages ye could just run an r/o system with floss and carbon but would be a bit more expensive to setup. less bulky all the same if space is small

Sean,

Is your RO unit kept indoors or outdoors.
I assume you do not have a wheelybin in your kitchen beside the sink.
Or maybe you have
I have a tap outside the house can I setup an RO Unit outside or does it function badly in cold or icy weather.

Greg i have my RO Unit in my utility room i have it hooked up to my mains my washing machine is off (only one on at a time)

I also have as Danielle says wheelie bins all over the place this is not also i only really have 1 or 2 for water changes but now i have a few more and i am store on olf water from water changes to do the big tank

When i was first doing it i had it plumped to my outside tap but because this was in the side off the house and i have this as the dog's run

He was eating my RO mine i had coming from there into my house so i moved it because this and also cause off the cold i didn't want to leave it outside i fond it much better in doors

I know a few have it set up like this and i got the idea from brian off the forum that he has it done like this

That remember me tick box is dangerous :P

Think I'll keep it simple to start and just get a wheelie connected to a downpipe. I usually fill a bin the night before for water changes so I can add a filter full of carbon to the usual peat and heater. Will the internal filter off my 60l be ok to for carbon and air, it has a Venturi.

Thx

Well said Danielle
Yeah I know if I tried to put a wheelie bin in the kitchen for making RO water it would be the straw that broke the camel's back as they say.
My wife is very proud of her kitchen.
Anyway the wheelie bin would get in the way of doing the cooking

I am also sure that other forum members wifes or girlfriends would have some choice things to say about the hobby if they were to access the forum :P

I am sure she would have a lot more to say but better to keep her off the forum as i would have to ban her for what she would say about me and my hobby on the forum

Hi all,
Well i have just set up 2 water butts one is connected up to down pipe and the second is connected to the first with a pipe and a carbon filter used for water drinking fountains luckily i have access to these now and then ;). i then have 2 25ltr drums that i fill from the filtered side and these are placed one either side of the open fire on which is on the go most nights anyway and in no time the water is 25 dig ready for the water changes.

Hmmm if someone sees my hanging around a drinking fountain with a screwdriver I may get in trouble.

But seriously, is simply allowing the rain water to pass through activated carbon enough to make it useable?

Also is an internal filter ok instead of an air stone. I have a small internal as my 60L is not going anywhere it seems, good to have a spare I guess.

Thx

lol have no idea if it’s enough to stabilise the water but i used to just put an air stone in a bag of carbon for a while but this meant back door open and air pump going so i thought there has to be a better way.
