Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all, I'm a newbie here & looking for some advice. I have been given a 45 l biorb life aquarium. It's one of the high rectangular tanks. Tropical. At the moment it's cycling and in thinking ahead about the stocking of it. At the mement I was thinking of a betta or a gourami with a shoal of tetra & maybe some shrimp. I am pretty clueless tho so not sure. I read some where that betta prefer a v low flow in the tank but am worried that the flow in the biorb is v rapid !! The tank is higher than it is wide so would that suit the tetras ? And also where would u even but shrimp. I'm in Wexford and have never seen them in a shop.
Open to any advice. Would like some smaller fish & 1 or 2 fancier fish. Thanks in advance.

i have a spare 40litre tank here and thinking about stocking it with a group of Celestial Pearl Danios and some shrimp powerful light and lots of moss and plants. Or you could go with some endler livebearers and Corydoras pygmaeus. If you want a betta im sure i could adjust the flow

Im looking for another 4 bamboo shrimp and going to go with some live plants

It seems that something in my tank likes to eat molting shrimp as its gotten my last 4 in the last 3 weeks!
As Im setting up a second tank to put most of my fish into tho, the shrimp will be safe in the smaller of the two tanks for the time being till i eventually upgrade that 1 too

Im not sure if its my bala shark, panganassis cat fish, beta or oneof the others that's gotten the shrimp at this stage.....

I might try keeping a few other types of shrimp in with the bamboo shrimp too!!!

I got them from Petmania in Carlow.
Know the lads in there very well and have asked them to order more in for me when i have the new tank cycled and sorted
They just need to know when I'll be ready for them and they will bring them in

hi hammie i dont have much experience in fish keeping but the ladz here helped me quite a bit. i have a 30 litres tank with a betta and a few shrimps and i was finding everyday a new dead shrimp cut in half and feeding another shrimp and i thought it was the betta fault but it turned out to be they were dying of copper poisoning coming from the water of my hot water tap ie copper tank. for the socking you could get a betta ( my favourite fish ) some shrimps amano or red cherry and a few dwarf corrydoras or some amber tetras, i prefer the corrys as i find them really funny to watch.
only had the shrimps when the tank is well established.

Thanks anthonyd for advice. Few questions for you. Does flow of water in pump matter for betta ? Does the material at bottom of tank affect the shrimp. There's a really rough ceramic media on bottom of my tank ? & finally what order would you introduce them fish ? Your stocking advice sounds like what I was thinking.

i have some fluval shrimp substrate in my tank which is small and black in color and it is a really nice contrast with the green plants and the red cherry shrimps. no sharp substrate for the corydoras as they are catfish as they will damage they barbels and i m pretty sure it is not good for the shrimps either but people in this forum are more knowledgeable than me so they will tell you more about it. as for the water flow my betta doesnt like strong current so my sponge filter is turned down to a minimum.
get a betta first and see how it goes then if you want someting else get some shrimps or some dwarf corrys but beware bettas have personalities and some will try to kill the shrimps but from what i have seen they are more curious towards them than agressive but they seem to get on better with the amano than the cherry i dont know if it s the size or the colour or both. just make sure they have some hiding spots to chill out.
do someting about the substrate and if you decide to change it or cover it make sure to rinse well the new one !

I can't comment on other types of shrimp, but substrate didn't seem to be an issue for the bamboo shrimp as i have yet to see them sitting on the tank floor! They usually hide on the underside of the bridge or on the small piece of bog wood i have in there for them.... Other places they hide would be in plants etc.

My beta has never shown any interest in the shrimp, but that could just be a size thing as bamboo shrimp are a larger shrimp
