Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

When you say small cichlid what type are you thinking. There are a few small types depending on what type of setup you would like.If you want a ph of 8 or above there are some nice Tanganyika Cichlids: Shell Dwellers that are small and breed good or malawi cichlids demasoni are a nice small type and very beautiful.

For a setup with 7 ph are lower german blue rams are nice and also there are loads of different apistogramma cichlids that you can choose from or even jewel cichlids will breed easy.pelvicachromis pulcher are also another type you could look into.

There are lots of differents types but remember when you breed you are going to need space for the fry.

What is the pH of your tap water? As it is easier to match fish to your water than your water to fish.

where i can buy those cichlid in Dublin

Most shops carry a varied range of Dwarf Cichlids, some just carry the "run of the mill" stuff others carry a more extensive range, so have a mooch around and see whats available.

60l too small for angels.... but you could keep a shoal of smaller fish like pencilfish or tetras depending on what cichlids you decide on..

If you are only keeping 2, then aggression wise that will take your African Cichlids out of the equation. Also Jewels will be far too big for a 60 litre. For a breeding pair you'll need a minimum of 120 litres. Rams would be your best bet, or Apistos as these are fish that pair up and keep one partner. For the Most part you will be looking at South American Cichlids. These are much smaller than the African relations. Both parents will grow their young together, which takes the worries of the male eating them. The water will need to be perfect but you can get spawning tips for all varieties easily online. Most will from a large, cold water change. The reason is it mimics spawning after flash floods in the Amazon. African are mouth brooders, they will become extremely aggressive once the female releases the fry and unless you plan on stripping (removing babies from her mouth) they will all be eaten. Also the rules are one male to 3 female with these and 60 litres is far too small again. Rams and Apistos can be fantastic, even nicer than African in my opinion, you just need to know where to get them :)

If your water is harder with a high pH you could always opt for a pair of Tanganyikan shell dwellers... Interesting little characters.
Though personally I prefer the soft water dwarf cichlids of West Africa and South America.
