Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

newly introduced Corydora floating on side

Hi all,

I bought a couple of corydoras from my LFS (A peppered and a bronze) to keep the three I have happy.

I brought him home and did the usual aclimitzation thing.
I noticed that he seemed to be floating but I just thought it was nothing.
He swam round for a while and then floated to the surface. If I move the net a little close, he swims down and then floats up again.
My LFS offered to take him back but I'd like to help the fella if I can.
He's not eating.

My tank is in pretty good shape (the water is fine).

All the other fish are ok and other new cory is mingling.

Any advice?

anyone?

In the absence of any other suggestions I would get that fish back to the shop as quickly as possible, I wouldn't think it had a long life ahead of it - but that's just what I would do.

Thank you, John.
I appreciate your reply.
It'll be Monday before they're open. I have clove oil and thought of euthanising him but I don't think I can do that.

He's limp at the top of the tank. His breathing does'nt seem too laboured. Every now and then he dives to the bottom and then because of swim bladder or some other issue floats up again to his side.

I'm a bit worried that it might be an infection and that it could be spread.
Otherwise, I have the lights out (to de-stress). :(

It sounds like more of a swim bladder problem than any infection - sometimes fish can lose their equilibrium - for a while, at least - from eating too much dried food (and probably a few mouthfuls of air in the process) but as Corys are largely bottom feeders I would suggest this is a little unlikely in this instance especially as you tell us it isn't feeding either.
Many years ago a 'hit-or-miss' attempt at a remedy was to keep the afflicted fish in a shallow (only just enough to cover the fish) water bath with the temperature increased up to the low eighties f. This might be worth a 'last-ditch' attempt, but I, personally, never found this to be of much help.
Up to you, really.
Maybe we can get a few more suggestions?

Thank you, guys.

This morning he's not moving much but at least he's not floating to the top.
I put him in a breeders fry net so I can monitor him.

All the fish are on a pea diet for a few days.

fingers crossed that he'll be ok.

I'll keep ye updated.

latest update:

the last couple of days, he has barely moved and when he swims, he loses his buoyancy.
he's not eating much.

I've since read that the pea diet doesn't work with cory's so I tried the recommended water changes.

I'm thinking of bringing him back to the LFS tomorrow.

After yesterday's update I was getting ready to write a post saying how delighted I was to be proved wrong - but after today's missive I think you have gone well 'beyond the call of duty' and have tried your best to pull the fish through but think now that it would be time to do as you suggest.
