Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

New 400 Litre tank - Rock decoration question

Hi, I had the opportunity to get a 400 litre tank and couldn't turn it down. It's way bigger than I had before. It wont be up for a while because I have to figure out fish. But in the meantime, I have to decorate. I want to put rockscape in it, but can find fake rocks, or even places with cool rocks. Can anyone recommend something? .

Hay. Nice size tank. I got lots of rocks off the beach. Tested them with acid (in your api master test kit)and if it didn’t fizz your good to go ( as in won’t affect ph). Give em a good scrub or boil for a couple of mins to be sure they’re clean.

Don't boil rocks, for fear of them exploding.

Off a beach, leave them in fresh water for a few days. Or, if possible, try get some from around a freshwater source, a lake or river

What is the dimensions of the tank?
Please don’t take stones from the beach, they are there for a reason!!
I think that beach stones will be to smooth to stack up to make a feature of without falling over and potentially cracking the glass.
You could drill and rod them, or glue them.
If you want to stack stone up high then going to a fish shop and stacking them on the shop floor. This is a good way to see what you can do with different sorts of stone.

You could also get a fake plastic/ stone background in stone look, and then only have a few stacked in the front , which gives more room for fish.

Remember that if you have a 400 liter tank, and put 60 liters of stone in it, it does cut down on your fish total.
Also cleaning a 400 liter tank, you need to leave room to hover all the substrate, so don’t make it to hard for yourself.

One final point what sort of filtration are you using for a 400 tank?

Take the journey slow and enjoy the ride!
