Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

filtration was created by umm (karen baker)
Hi. Can anyone tell me how many times per hour should the water be filtered. I have read anything from 6 to 20 TPH. Seems a bit excessive to me. thanks

The amount of water circulating in a tank depends on the fish you keep in the tank.
Some fish are from verry fast flowing rivers and will need a larger turn over per hour. Some are found at the base of water falls (Dennison barbs)or even vertically up in a water fall clung to rocks ( stephedon Gobys). So you can imagine how fast the water would be flowing.
At the other end of the scale some fish are found in muddy pools of stagnant water with no water flow (Betta).

It is best not to mix fish from one extreme to another. Although i think we are all guilty of this at some stage. I know i am.
You wouldent put a fighting fish in a tank circulating like a washing machine. He would be exhausted in no time and quickly die.

I hope this helps, Darren.

Thanks for reply. I hadn't thought of it like that. I am going to set up a community tank. So far on my list is (it's constantly changing) TIGER BARBS, TETRAS, DWARF CICHLIDS, LOACHES and CORYS. Its going to be a big tank so I reckon the barbs will leavr the others alone as I can put in a large number of them. Its hard to decide cos I know I could set up a really nice species tank but I really like all the fish that I mention above.

Hi umm, I am setting up a community tank and using a fluval plus filter. I would highly recommend them and alot of other fishkeepers that I know are using them too! If you google it you will find very detailed specs on them esp the info on TPH.

Hope this may be of some use to you!!!

Leonie

Thanks for that. What sort of fish are you thinking of putting in?

I agree with Leonie that the fluval plus internal filter are great. Hassle free easy to maintain.
If you were thinking of using an external filter i would go for a tetratec. Well priced and easy to maintain. I have yet to hear a bad word about them.

Darren.
