Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Bubbles from Filter?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question! Im just wondering about my aquarium. I have a Vita tech (another name for Enheim I think) filter which is serving its purpose fine to date. However I do have a question, my tank is 85 litres. I notice there is alot of small (I mean v small) bubbles constantly swirling the tank. My filter blows bubbles outwards to the tank and the fish seem to be fine with it. My rather silly question is, do these small bubbles upset my guppies, mollies, tetras and bronze catfish ? The water parameters are perfect at present . GH 60 KH 60 PH 7.0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 20.
Again sorry if the question appears silly ! I know I can set the filter output to the side of the tank but I dont think thing is wrong with it at the moment?

No such thing as a silly Question,

No harm at all,
I have my air stone under my internal filter so the bubbles get sucked up in to the filter and come out the nozzle in the form of very fine bubbles.

HI Fishowner,

this will do no harm at all in fact i aim one of my outlets side ways to create this. the more disturbance the better more oxygen in water.

some internals come with a dive to make this happen and can be adjustable.

It also has the advantage that you can see at a glance that your filter is working correctly!

And as Zale says there is no such thing a silly question!!!! And i should know i asked enough of them!

I have a Vitatech filter on a 60l tank I got from Aldi. It has a Venturi which is a small tube from the outlet that extends above the water line. The purpose is to draw in air and creat small air bubbles. Does your filter have this? If so, it's perfectly normal. If not, once you have good water flow, it's not doing any harm.

Regards,

Ken.

the way to look at this issue is the more air getting into your water the better oxygenated it will be and as such the healthier your fish will be look what happens us when we're out of the city and in the country side we feel revitalised with the clean air.. this is what happening in your tank your providing good clean air for your fish my eheims are set to vigourously cause a flow in the tank to acheive this and my fish have never looked healthier so dont worry about it,its a good thing plus it helps drive off the residue of the likes of chlorine in water which is also a good thing

Thats actually a similar one to mine,I got mine in Lidl prior to Xmas. Its a Vitatech also, this is another name for eheims..good internal sponge filter. I clean the sponge once every 4 weeks or so. And I do weekly water changes.(Usually about 20%).
