Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Have to say i would never use one, it been along time but last time many years ago, i came home to almost dead fish and losses were low. but any loss is unacceptable to me.

when we feed fish on a daily bases they have build up a store of energy. for the lean times it nature way, an inbuilt survival system we can turn to our advantage for the few days before leaving feed muilitimes a day some treat food as well then when you go they will quite happily go about their livees.

just before going check equipment and remove all un eaten food a water change is advisable and if possiable have some one check on equipment

at holiday time there is more fish lost because of equipment failure than anything else.

I am going to get a weekly pill box and put the correct amout of food in it for each day and leave it with my friend. I was thinking about getting an automatic feeder but if anything happened to any of the fish then there would be alot of food going to waste and we know what that leads to!!!!

If you're going away for just one week i'll let them do some fasting....

Fish can do without food for quite long periods of time without issues... I'll follow the advice given by Mickey. ;)

You run more risks asking someone to feed them than leaving them alone.

Anytime I go away I give them a good feed 2 days before going, a big water change and good cleaning the day before I go with a normal feed, and the wife feeds them only once a week.
The last time I was away (for 6weeks) she forgot to feed the last week so they went 2 weeks without food and I had no casualties & the water wasn't to bad...

I agree with Zales method i use it myself all the time and the fish are healthy and fit, i dont trust others to feed them... too may past disasters and losses of expensive fish due to it..a bit of a diet for a week will do them no harm

If the quantity and day of feeding is in black and white surely it should be ok or is it still risky?

Well, not off to a good start, did a 30% water change last night, came down this morning and one of my black neon tetras had died, sad as the black neons were the first fish I put into the tank. Off on holidays in a few hours, hope the rest do better - fingers crossed...

I'm going away for 2 weeks soon enough. Would this be too long to leave them without food? I have 7 neon tetras and two albino corys

might be a little long but if going away that length i use tetras new holiday food, it in a jelly fish love it and have never had a loss with using it, drop in one for the first week and give them a diet on the second you should be ok, oh yes and do a water change before you go to freshen up the tank,
enjoy the hols
