Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,i am new to the forum and need some advice with my first planted tank.It is a rekord 96 that is up and running for five weeks now.I put a four bronze catfish in on sunday and found one dead today.I have tested the water and it is always the same.
PH=7.3
PH HIGH=7.4
AMMONIA=0
NITRATE=0
NITRITE=0
Tank temp is 25.0C
I can't seem to get the ph down even with 10% water changes so any help would be great.I want to get more fish but want to be sure there new home is 100%.

Hi Orca,

Welcome to the forum!

Your water parameters look fine (no ammonia/nitrite) to me. Unless you had a major swing in it, I don't think the pH should have much to do with the loss of your bronze catfish.
It might just be that this particular one was more vulnerable or sick and he just died. It can happen. How are the other fish? Are they behaving normally ?

Hi valerie,
The other catfish are looking fine so it looks like it was just a sick fish.Do you think it is ok to put more fish in next weekend or should i give the tank more time.

hi Orca, at five weeks running your filter should be about mature enough to add more livestock, but dont run out and buy 20 fish although you may be tempted too, buy a few at a time and add them a least a week to two weeks apart, this will give your filter time to adjust to the increased work load, keep on checking nitrate, nitrite and ammonia these will tell you when its safe to add your next purchases

Hi Orca,

Yes, 6 or 8 silvertip tetras should be ok to add to your tank next. The aim of the game is to add small quantities like these into your tank in order to let your 'bioload' develop progressively, avoiding any spikes in these toxic compounds.

(Once you have more fish in your tank, you might want to think about getting a small hospital/quarantine tank to accomodate your newcomers for a couple of weeks before adding them to your main tank, just in case :-)).

You are at a very enjoyable stage which is shopping for and adding stock to the tank. Enjoy !!!

Regards,
Valerie
